Lore Implications of New Customization

So, I know it may not be a huge deal for some people, but I am passionate about this in particular. So, in shadowlands, it was announced that many new customization options were coming, including some that may be considered a different “race” in terms of lore, even if the gameplay doesn’t show that.

Those revealed thus far being Dark Trolls, Sand Trolls, and Wildhammer. I really, REALLY hope they add some lore with these customizations, like the dark warrior(or even just simple quest text or a comment on it).

What do you think will happen?

I like to think they will bring several smaller tribes into the horde, such as the Frostmane. I also hope they will have characters and leaders of their own in time, such as if forest trolls become playable- I would like to see Primalist Revantusk take more part in politics.

Same goes for other races, such as the Taunka and seeing Roanauk and other taunka more.

IN SHORT, I hope that despite these races not getting full racial treatment, they do not get pushed into the shadows as most NPC horde races are atm. I want them to be active and appear as troops, NPCs and even in the leadership meetings.

I am so hoping for San’layn.

They should give the High Elf customization to Void Elves.

i am more worried with the human customization.

it will be just a custom option…or there is more?
are we going to see new characters with real world ethics?
or… are we going to see changes in some main characters a la netflix?.

in any case… were will they come from?

I agree! I hope they’re acknowledged in lore and get to appear more. I’m hoping they add all the things that already are in the factions in lore like Dragonmaw orcs, MU Blackrock orcs, Grimtotem tauren, Shatterspear trolls (some use skins not available to Darkspear), undead high elves, Shattered Hand mag’har (red eyes and more pale), high elves, Frostborn dwarves, and maybe Kaldorei worgen.

I’m not sure if they’ll go far beyond reskins but if they do, taunka, forest trolls, mok’nathal, and broken/krokul would be awesome!

I think they should have shared all of the customization aspects between the Blood and Void Elves except the skin and tendril issues.

I do hope we get some lore tidbits. So many troll roleplayers, myself included, will be so happy to be able to actually look like the troll tribe we’re trying to roleplay.

My poor Revantusk. So skinny compared to his brethren.

The next step that’d be awesome is additional model customizations. Big/skinny. Short/tall. Hell, even being able to adjust your character’s height on a slider would be awesome. Doesn’t have to be anything major, just let me scale the entire model up and down by 10%.

I can see it now. Countless people playing giant dwarves that are almost man height. Would they still be called dwarves or something else?

The world’s tallest dwarf.

I mean… That’s why I said limit it to 10%. If someone is 5’10", that means they’re 70" tall. So… ± 10% is anywhere between 5’3" and 6’5", which seems pretty reasonable.

I wonder if they are going to give the Night Elves the undead customization or if they keep them Horde for a possible future allied race

I actually want an undead customization for night elves. Having glowing red eyes on a night elf and black hair would be noice… and I think would look way cooler for the vengeance peeps than that friggin black eye garbage.

I think the black eyes are good, but all Night Elf NPCs should have them, Shandris didn’t get them even though she was right there.

Not even sure if there will be more allied races, so if they don’t give the customization option to the Night Elves thry will probably do absolutely nothing with them and just keep them Horde, as lore breaking as it is.

The ship for Dark Rangers has sailed unfortunately.

Not necessarily! This could be the chance! The skins already exist in-game. Blizzard would just have to enable it for players to access.

Strongly doubt they’ll add specific lore explanations RE Wildhammer, troll, etc. Of course, they could, but I doubt they’d bother with it, as it’s not necessarily “relevant” to the overarching plot of the expansion.

Absolutely think this will happen. Expect to see them in the 7th Legion/Hono(u)rbound if they ever appear again, or just generally in clusters of troops.

Don’t set yourself up for disappointment, honestly. If they did, every meeting would have a gorillion NPCs in it and it’d be pointless. Plus, surely the other troll tribes would just be under the banner of Zandalari, surely?

There’s already lore for humans of different ethnic looks, it’s been there the whole time, the new models just kind of removed the original looks before. They don’t need to make up new human cultures to suit the new customizations at all, because current human lore allows for it.

The Vrykul were hit hardest by the Curse of Flesh, which we can clearly see since humans are the furthest removed from their original versions. The Curse of Flesh is basically evolution on steroids, allowing for a ton of variation.

There’s a biiiiiig time gap between the first humans leaving the nest, and Thoradin uniting all the human tribes and clans, leaving plenty of time for all sorts of traits to be cultivated before everyone was brought under one banner, and then scattered again as time went on and the new kingdoms were formed. Big Kul Tirans, for instance, are a far more dramatic variation from other types of humans than African or Asian physical traits, and the lore explanation is literally ‘they’re just bigger’.

Blizzard isn’t going to touch handling humans with a culture that’s anything other than generic medieval fantasy with a ten foot pole, not when there’s lore than lets them have their cake and eat it too.

Besides, if you look at the vanilla models, we had much darker skin tones, and one of the female human faces was fairly obvious Asian inspired. This is just adding those options back, and adding more.

Are they adding new customization to gnomes, dwarves, and belfs similar to what they’re adding for humans? Hadn’t heard anything about them one way or the other.

I dislike the black eye glow thing. It’s one of those things that sounds cool on paper, but sucks in reality.
