Like the title says I was wondering about IC names for Hunter pets, particularly those for RPing as Beastmasters.
Would it be better to give your pets a “person” name if you are close to them? Are simple nicknames like “Fang” or descriptive nicknames like “Axebeak” or “Strongback” acceptable? Particularly looking for answers for what Tauren or Orcs would name their pets.
I don’t think it really matters unless it matters specifically to you.
What I mean by this is that even IRL giving an animal a “Human” name is common placed but can be seen as unoriginal to others. There are lots of Spots and Fluffys running around as much as Spike, Boots, etc. These are common pet names you’d not often see a human having.
At the same time many people try to humanize their pet by giving them a name more associated with what they’d name their child. I’ve had several pets growing up; Smokey, Kiba, Kano, Sabaka, Keirah, Karai, Jake, Slith, mumas… You can see though my list of names were I may fall on that spectrum.
Each character has their own personality and likely will fall into one of these zones. What this means is that it doesn’t really matter unless it does to the character.
Tauren and Orcs have their own culture and naming conventions. You can go onto Wowpedia and search for Orc/Tauren NPCs and take a name from one of them. These would be the more “human” style names you or your character would be after.
On the same note you can also look towards the NPCs with named companions to get inspiration as well. For example I believe there is a Frostwolf Orc with a well Frostwolf with the name Whitefang. I have a Tauren with a tiger named Snowstalker which you can see on this page.
Baine here has a Frostwolf with the name Whitefang as well. Though I also have an Eagle named Cherokee, a Scorpid name Sandstone, etc. and so forth. You can see them here if you’d like.
Again it just depends on your preference as a Hunter. I wouldn’t worry too much on it.
From what I have gathered it is kind of both.
Tauren most often give individual beasts names that mean something in Taurahe
Arikara =Vengeance
Echeyakee = Whitemist
Ishamuhale = Speartooth
Lakota’mani = Eathshaker
Lar’korwi = Sharpclaw
and so on
But there are also beasts that are given similar names in English like Ghosthowl or ones that have names seemingly without meaning such as Kyle or Mazzranache
It really depends on the personality of the Hunter.
What would be some names a blood elf would name her pet?
I usually name my pet based off the race I play. The lion for my Nelf hunter is Kel’Magnus but an ironic name couldn’t hurt either. I tamed one of the crows and named him Craven which is a play on the word crow and raven, but the definition means cowardly.
So would really need to know what you’re taming.
On this character I have a pair of foxes named Dusk and Tempest.

It’s just as lore friendly for a Beastmaster not to name her pets at all. If she’s bonded to them strong enough that she considers herself a single entity with her bonded pet.
