Lore about the Maw

“A crumbling manuscript, written in a time before the Maw was called the Maw. Ve’nari will be interested in this.”

The Maw was not always called the Maw. The fact that the word Obleron is used may indicate that Obleron is the true name of the Maw… Of course such a name indicates Obliteration and Oblivion… Not surprising since there is Stygia created from the destruction of Souls everywhere!

What caused did the realm of obliteration and oblivion get declared the Maw?

Fel/Chaos Magic users have been to the Maw it seems… Not really surprising since there are Inquisitors in Torghast and Demons in Maldraxxus’s Theater of Pain as well.

I wonder if an old god was there somehow. The Icecrown citadel was constructed mostly of Saronite, right? So, what is the Jailor’s citadel made of? (Still confused over whether “Torghast” just the name of the floating tower, or if it also includes the citadel.)

Only thoughts.
Originally the Maw was the Purgatory of Shadowlans and souls could redeemed and go to the other places and maybe Arbiters only role was to decide who will go there. At some point that process was altered and the Maw became an eternal prison.

(Commentary): Off-Topic a bit, but I really love the world building they’re doing with Shadowlands. Stuff like the epitaphs letting us know about wars with the Light and Void, and then the races that came before, and now we’re learning the Maw wasn’t always even the Maw, that it originally was more like Revendreth. It’s this level of attention to detail that I love. Makes me feel like this’ll be close to Mists of Pandaria, just without a dumb faction conflict.

The name “Obleron” tied to the manuscript indicates Oblivion and Obliteration…

May have not been a Maw of torment but still a place of Soul obliteration and Stygia creation.

Of course if it turns out it did serve the role of Revendreth then Sire Denathrius’s rise to power creating Revendreth changed the fate of the Death Realm which likely means that the Dreadlords’ obtaining of the Lich King’s Armor and Weapons was what led to the Jailer’s imprisonment.

The fact that Sire Denathrius ultimately sided with the prisoner of his people would be very interesting in that case…

The Oblivion/Obliteration part reminds me of the Kyrians where ,if i got it correct souls pesish and the anima is used to create something else. Was this fate originally only the fate of the unredeemed?

You’re suggesting that the Obliteration of memories was the original purpose of the Maw?

That would explain why the Jailer’s original Model resembled a Kyrian… And the Bluish Anima Crystals.

It would be ironic if the mastermind of this process was now not even bothering with memory erasure but straight up violent Soul destruction resulting in Stygia(Blackish-Prismatic byproduct of violently destroying Souls) and Phantasma(Blue-Grey expended Anima) creation!

Fits to the Oblivion-Oblidaration you suggest but also with Purgatory, not all souls were obligerated only those who failed the second chance.

Just noticed that the extracted Memories in Bastion use the exact same Blackish-Prismatic Death Magic as the Maw aside from sometimes dealing Arcane Damage instead of Shadow Damage… Torghast also has a Memory as one of the Rares guarding the door.

Seems the Cyan Death Magic in Bastion may be the Jailer’s Stygia… with Memories as a variant of Stygia. It does explain why the Kyrian mention pain from the procedure they are going through.

Violent Soul destruction creates Stygia(Blackish Memories or Cyan Death Energies) which may very well be the fuel used by Bastion, Oribos and the Maw…

I wonder if that will be in reference to someone at some point. It looks one letter away from Oberon.

Ardenweald has a Fae vibe going on. They have their Winter Queen. I wonder how much more fae/fairy stuff will pop up. Or A Midsummer Night’s Dream references.

According to Wikipedia, the word Oberon have multiple meanings and one of them is “King”. I know that Blizzard can give whatever meaning to the words they use… Can’t wait to see all theses stories unfold.
