Looking for more/heavily in depth information about Pet Breeds

Basically as the title states, I’m starting to get into Pet battles in WoW and I’ve been looking for a heavy break down of pet breeds and what breeds are best for what types of pets.

To put it simply I like to min/max a lot of my adventures so I don’t want to collect breeds that are useless when a different breed is better, and vice versa. I tried to make a post on warcraftpets dot com but after making a new account I am unable to post or something.

I found a website called azerothadoptionagency but I don’t know who made that and how heavy the input is in for the breeds.

For example I have 3 level 25 breeds for Emerald Proto’s but the website only suggests to use a P/P, etc.

If there are guides out there that break it down as simple as “For this pet you will only need this breed” or “For this type of pet you should focus on X breed, where maybe for this type of pet X breed is better” I would appreciate them or any general info people can give me about breeds would be nice, thanks.

In this case it’s because the Emerald Proto is a very tanky pet with its heals and the amount it heals each turn, especially with Emerald Dream is larger the more power a pet has.

I’m hardly an expert at it, but generally the pure breeds; P/P, S/S, and to a lesser extent H/H are the best to shoot for, B/B is the exception here as that means they don’t have any bonus stats, although in a lot of cases B/B is all the pet comes in.

For flyers I like P/S because with their racial they’ll have a speed advantage initially anyway and they might as get get some extra power on their hits.

Some of it’s common sense, if it gains an advantage by attacking first, try to get the fastest version of that pet and or extra if it attacks last like a lot of the Dragonkin go for the most powerful one you can get.

The dodge ability will last two turns if your pet can cast it first, and rabbits and bunnies are very popular for dodge/burrow teams that avoid a lot of attacks of more powerful pets, so you’ll see recommendations for fast rabbits. 289 is I believe the median speed stat with anything higher technically considered fast, but usually you’ll want something higher that 300 at minimum for speed.

But just try to get a variety pets, there are very few cases where only a single breed of a specific pet is necessary. There are enough similar pets within each family that you’ll be able to have a variety of breeds to draw from without needing each pet in every breed it comes in.

I’ve dived into the deep-end for breeds and pretty much decided I want the highest speed breed first, the highest power breed second, and if the highest speed & power breed are the same breed, I take the highest health. I keep no more than 2 of any pet (I ran into issues with the pet cap when trying to do 3). The one exception I make is that if there is an H/H breed, I’ll take it as one of my two pets unless there’s also an S/S and a P/P (in which case I take those two).

Beyond that, there are a few breeds that perform well that I would not pick up following those rules. In those rare cases, I will make exceptions to my rules and pick one of those breeds instead. These pets are usually found while browsing Xu-Fu’s Pet Battle Strategies website. They’ll either appear on the PvP Pet Tier list or in specific strategies for harder Pet Battle encounters/dungeons (for instance, Family Exorcist achievement in Shadowlands).

Ya, some of the stuff seemed relatively obvious, things such as getting speed for critters seemed good, getting power on flyers seemed good with their racial, etc. I guess I’m just annoyed that I have to constantly check for breeds all the time. I want to collect a lot and I dont know when to have 3 of one breed or not.

I remember collecting 3 of a blue breed whelp that I took a long time to find in Borean Tundra, cant log in and remember the name now but since it’s a dragonkin it probably went to waste.

It’s almost never will you need the same pet in three separate breeds. There are some where both the P/P and S/S are good to have but you can usually get by with either because there are plenty of similar pets that while they might not come in S/S or P/P can cover you for things like P/S, P/H, ect.

Just as a note for clarity, this is incorrect. The B stands for balance and you get a balanced distribution of stats between H, P, and S. The catch is the total number of stat increases you get is less than if you have one of the 3 pure breeds mentioned above. However, if you mix a B stat with a pure stat like P, then the pure stat overrides. Take the zandalari kneebiter, it has both a a P/S and a P/B The P/B has the same power as the P/S (the P overrides the B), but the P/B has more health and less speed than the P/S

Here is a guide on breeds you can read up on:

Breeds don’t matter that much unless you are heavy into PvP. In that case, speed makes a big difference. If you can dictate the terms of the battle, you have a big advantage.

There are some tamer battles where it does make a difference. Sometimes you will see a breed specified or speed > 300.

It also depends on how many pets you plan on collecting. If you just want enough to battle tamers and dabble in PvP, you probably don’t need a lot more than 100 or so pets. If you are a collector, it won’t matter if your 5th rabbit is s/s or s/b.
