Looking for Gameplay Critique - What Am I Doing Right/Wrong?

I can’t dps worth a Hoover Dam, it’ll be a healer game. Hopefully one without pet classes so I don’t tab target and waste lots of globals.

Well this is the first time someone has genuinely asked for help instead of asking for confirmation that he/she’s being held back all expansion.

Yea seen plenty of “BM droolers holding my warrior back!”. I suppose is good to see the forums used for it’s actual intended purpose.

First off, thanks for taking the time to break all of this down so thoroughly. Honestly, a lot of these mistakes seem so obvious now that you’ve pointed them out, and I can’t believe I didn’t catch them while playing. Stuff like wasting time with random movement, not pressing damage buttons enough, and misusing CC just stands out like a sore thumb after reading your feedback.

The main things I’m taking away:

  • Damage uptime: I need to stop wasting so many globals. After rewatching and looking at the points you’ve made, it’s clear I’m losing so much pressure by not sticking to my rotation and overthinking things like unnecessary CC.
  • CC priorities: I’ve got to pay more attention to DRs and time my CC on the healer or DPS depending on the situation. CC for the sake of CC has been a massive crutch for me, I guess just panic button?
  • Positioning and cooldowns: The note about pressing Dark Pact earlier and using Portal during their cooldowns instead of scrambling to react was huge. I’ll work on that.
  • Fakes and casts: Getting kicked so much is killing me. Faking more consistently and keeping my rotation clean is clearly the next big step.

The way you explained everything makes it impossible not to see how much room I have to improve. I appreciate the mix of critique and encouragement—it’s motivating. I’ll keep working on tightening everything up and will definitely focus on being more efficient with my globals and stop strafing like a monkey for no reason. Thanks again for the detailed feedback! That was absolutely NOT what I was expecting to receive, very solid!

Go for it! I’m always happy to help!

LOL IDK about that, I just like to help people, especially if they’re genuinely and sincerely asking!

Is that even a thing anymore? I thought we got rid of that. I haven’t seen one here since Dilly and occasionally that WPVP guy, but I don’t think he does arena outside of shuffle tank pushes

I cannot stress enough that EVERYONE does this. It’s THE most common problem, usually a result of movement.

^^^

Yeah, always happy to help!

This happens to EVERYONE, and now that you’ve seen it you’ll never be able to unsee it. Watching back your own gameplay can be uncomfortable, but as long as you’re honest with yourself it’s without a doubt the best way to improve.

When I started recording and watching back my games back in slands I literally went up 600 cr and got my first r1 title. giving yourself personal accountability and trying to improve is SO SO instrumental in improving.

I think you have a phenomenal mentality here and I really appreciate and respect how refreshing it is to see.

Yeah, of course! Almost no one recognizes how many mistakes they’re making while they’re playing because there’s SO much going on in arena and it can be REALLY helpful to have a second set of eyes watch it back. I also think it’s a lot more helpful to break it down global-by-global because then you can actually SEE what is happening and when and what can be done better.

Honestly, I was bracing myself for a bit of a roast session when I posted this—based on other threads; however, I just want to get better, and hearing stuff like this makes it a lot easier to put myself out there. Thanks.

I know the forums can be toxic at times and I can’t speak for everyone, but I can promise that if you or anyone asks a genuine gameplay question or for help understanding a matchup or reviewing a game, I’m always happy to help and I do think that most people feel the same way!

It’s when people dismiss their own mistakes that’s frustrating and say things like, “Oh, class XYZ OP there’s nothing I can do, they need nerfs”. A good 90% of the playerbase is making SO many mistakes, especially regarding rotations and movement that’s causing them to lose literally 50% dps.

Here are some soulburn macros.
I made a macro to use the shard because keybinding the item never worked right for me. I don’t know why…

Biggest mistake newer casters and you do is wasting so many globals doing so many things that add little to zero added value compared to just doing straight solid damage.

Theres a comment here about curse uptime: thats dogwater advice unless youre aff with jinx.

Rest of the time you amp curse a melee/caster using his cd’s or slowing down someone at the right time, but youre sure as hell not trying to keep uptime on an unimpactful curse inatead of doing damage.

The best breakdown is this: doing maximum pressure while using youre defensives optimally is your first order of priority.

Whatever else you do should not be hindering these first two things, like running around trying to CC while cutting your damage in half.

Max pressure, good defensives, then weave in good CC (as a lock thats super important), then you can refine from there.

Also @Nasrajin, stop hating on demo shadowbolts, had one crit for 1M, not too shabby

^100%.
SO often I see players spending all their tome trying to cc or kite and do no damage and learn to play the game incorrectly and struggle because of it.

^^^ amp curse is very good to use (I mention it at one point), but curse itself isn’t as important, especially in 2s UNLESS you’re using it as an instant global while you’re moving.

^pve rotation V important.

And I hope you didn’t hardcast it when dogs or a hand of guldan with shards was available, especially before a tyrant!!! :rage:

True lol, youre right, hog/dogs/hound/tyrant, sb’s are just gravy.

hey nice vid +1

I could see that you are playing elf and throwing out the occasional sick jump-spin so I’m psure you have a good grasp on things

I did also notice ofc that you’re playing demo and just rotating through several spell schools while giving the opposing team a pve-mob look when it comes to landing kicks- I understand this is typical of demo players but have you considered a revision of this arguably exploitative tactic?

Okay sry if that was kinda troll, I’ve played many 2s matches with and against demo locks, fr +1

Lmao cov is the nicest dude unless you come at him side ways then what happens happens :man_shrugging::rofl:

Cov a good dude all around. Has given me a solid critique or two when I was much younger and being overly toxic. Plus he doesn’t play stinky bm hunter

I don’t think I’m going to go for it. I either 3-3 or 2-4 every lobby lately and I know most of the reasons why.

Can’t get away from 1550 cr., add 1 lose 18, add 9, lose 20. I will likely go back to pve as there is nothing for someone as mediocre/bad as I am on this side of the house and just dabble as I used to do every couple of years. No sense in putting myself through extra frustration and aggravation.

I feel like I’m a booster but not in the “I’ll increase your rating by carrying you” way.

Cov is generally nice to people who haven’t been rude. Just my experience.
