Looking for a pc under 500 for shadowlands

Want to be able to play in good-high around 50fps. and room for expansion.

Any suggestions? Opening to building as well.

What monitor are you going to use?

That is going to be difficult I started building based off even a basic RX 570 that is just a bit over $100. Alternatively you can do an RX 560 but it isn’t going to last as long.

Maybe look for something similar and a 2600x used?

8GB is fine is your just running wow.

500ish GB SSD you can get a basic one for $50 ish.

You will have to go building the PC as the only thing pre-built would be based on the Ryzen R5 3400G. Most likely your build would be based on the Ryzen 3100x, AMD RX 560 video card and 250GB SSD. Budget 8GB ram, case, mobo, stock cooler and EVGA 450BR PSU (or similar cost).

Do you have a current PC that you can recycle parts from?

with that low a budget i’d consider secondhand deals

Ryzen 4000 series (Zen2) pre-built would be better if they exist yet.

They’re kind of expensive, at least the Ryzen 7 4700g will be. Probably want to pick up a Ryzen 5 4600g and the highest clocked memory modules you can fit in your budget. Unlike the CPU’s, Renoir’s memory controller can handle seriously insane memory clocks.

Like ridiculously high memory clocks, Renoir actually holds the world record for memory overclocking.

4400g would be fine I haven’t seen any let alone prices

I didn’t see any on amazon, newegg, and google store. Newegg had the 4750g for sale but it costs as much as his budget. Cyberpower did not have any APUs and I stopped my search there.

Personally , I’m not a big fan of the APU jack of all trades master of none performance.

4000 series (desktop cpu’s) are zen 3. Zen 2 for desktop are the 3000 series, for laptops the 4000 series is zen 2 as well.

I think they have their place, but it’s pretty niche.

The higher performance APUs are a strange half-measure. They’re pointless for people who don’t game at all, as they’d be better served with the cheapest Athlon or Pentium you can get. They’re also not really usable for more enthusiastic gamers.

They’re for people who are casual “gamers” and people who can’t afford better, and I think that’s really it.

APUs are a generation behind so zen 2 for 4000. Zen3 isn’t out yet for anything it gets announced on 10/8/2020.

Under $500 and just wow is kinda niche. Ideally an RX 570 or similar performance would be better but might not make the budget without going for the used market.

Digital Storm’s Lynx starts at $699…prolly the best deal you’re gonna find in a quality PC. And they will give it to you for $23 a month.

They have their place but the user really needs to understand them and frequently they don’t. APUs are best for when your demands won’t ever change. For example; a home theater PC, someone who will only play one game (CIV 5, HL2, Diablo III, etc.,) or just wants to play a back catalog of STEAM games but has no desire for current games. The problem with APUs I always see is two fold;

1- APUs are poorly reviewed. Most reviewers treat them as any other CPU/GPU and test them with low latency/high frequency RAM and plenty of it. In my experience most APU buyers are budget shoppers (like the OP) or budget pre-builts. So they stick the APU with cheap RAM (high latency, low frequency, single channel) and as little as possible. As we all know APUs are very RAM dependent and now all the sudden that APU build is maxing out all its RAM while gaming and performing at 20% under what the buyer saw on all the review sites. That issue then leads into…

2 - Most gamers get them for a current game and for future games. They quickly realize the APU graphics are not up to par with the new game and they get a dedicated GPU which now means they are stuck with a mediocre CPU plus they can’t even sell their old GPU to recoup costs. So the whole set up gets replaced much faster then a dedicated CPU and GPU set up which means a bad RIO on your initial investment.

Yeah, i agree. They’re not worth the money, which is why I mentioned trying the used market. That has its own risks, but if you’re wanting to pay with a limited budget your options are more restricted.

Thank you all for your responses so far. So I am totally open to a used machine.
IN general this machine will ONLY be to play world of warcraft and maybe have youtube open in another screen. (If i need to drop another 100-200 I can but its hard to justify spending 700 to play 1 video game you know?)

Where would you guys suggest shopping for a used PC? I was looking on ebay and saw some shady deals just wasn’t sure if there is a more curated website to buy used PCs.

best,

Maybe try one of the local shops in your area. The owner may have some used parts they can put together for you but you really have to get a parts list from them and do your research (before you buy anything) as they can also dump some outdated garbage on you.

Local deals (craigslist, FB MP etc.) are really the only worthwhile approach for used parts. Used parts online like ebay tend to lose a lot of value.

There should be a glut of 2nd hand AMD parts and RAM/storage is generally inexpensive. Your biggest costs will be GPU and power supply, probably.

another option is the DELL outlet store, you can grab an i3-9100 system (easily playable but not the best) for $320 or an i5-9400 system for $430 (will handle WoW with no issues). Check the web for discount coupons. Add a dedicated SSD for the game, some more RAM and a GPU that gets all its power from the mobo.
