Hey, everyone!
Believe it or not, a long time ago I was PVPing with a hunter near a pond south of the Stormwind City, and when I jumped into the water while the flame trap was burning on me, it didn’t do periodic fire damage underwater.

Okay grandma, lets go in for a nap.
Fire elementals were also immune to fire damage. Molten core was an interesting era.
The game in general tried to honor some of the “realistic limitations” of a fantasy world that are often present in TTRPGs.
But such nuances are impossible to balance over time.
I remember being so mad as a rogue leveling in Searing Gorge that the golems were immune to poison.
This is why we add pure alkali metal shrapnel to our flame traps now.
And yet I’d put cooking fires on the Thunder Bluff pond all the time. Coding specific abilities to function differently leaves all kinds of gaps like that.
I was doing no damage in classic on a mob as a mage. This mob have fire resistance for some reason but wasn’t really a mob that screamed fire elemental to me so I couldn’t figure out what why I couldn’t damage it.
Just sits there underwater with two burning skeletal hounds
Fun fact: Fire does burn underwater IRL.
It’s the lack of available oxygen, not the water itself, that extinguishes the fire.
But if you provide the oxygen or if you burn a substance that liberates oxygen as it burns, you can have fire underwater no problem
time to test that theory…fel fire go!
Sodium shrapnel traps.
There was a time you could go from Auberdine to Teldrassil by walking on fires made by cooking.
Potassium in water…
Just chalk it up to magic. It’s how a Fire Mage can kill a Fire Elemental with fire!
Honestly, I never liked the idea of Elementals being immune to their elements.
Like, I’m made of flesh and bone. That doesn’t make me immune to punches.
Likewise, just because a Fire Elemental is made of fire doesn’t mean it should be immune to fire. Resistant? Maybe.
Maybe they just dissipate the fire? That’s like being a corpumancer and facing a person made of flesh.
