I killed a couple mobs, logged out, watched the count down timer get to 0 and go to the character selection screen.
When I came to log back in, I get to the character selection screen and my character is a ghost in the char selection screen, and sure enough I’m dead.
I don’t quite understand what is going on when everything I read says that isn’t how it works…

Sounds like griefing. Blizzard should fix it so he can keep his SOI buff.
How long were you logged out? Mobs could have respawned. There is a small lag after you log out that you are still in game.
I agree. He was griefed by his own server. Bad server connections should be the next ban wave.

People have been greifing for 17 years and it never netted changes this substantial, this fast. Usually banning the griefers is sufficient.
They needed to make changes to preserve your precious buff. You can still be griefed, you’ll just keep your buff now when it happens.

If you log out, not in a rest area, there is some time before your character actually leaves. I think it’s like a minute, but not sure.

If it was just about griefing, you still haven’t established why for the past 17 years bans and suspensions were sufficient but this requires a change.
