Lockups since 8.3.7 - Nvidia GPUs (Windows Thread)

I finally found the Debug Mode under Help. Thanks. I have that set also, so hoping this is the cure for now. I still have had zero crashes for 7 days now.

Many thanks to everyone who is digging for answers since we have none from Blizzard since the initial post here.

Complete system lockup 5 times tonight as soon as I login.

I think im done trying to play wow at the moment.

Did you go back on the drivers? Did you try DX11? Did you try using Debug mode? If so, wow. If not, why give up before at least trying them?

It is good to see we are helping each other out, despite the dead silence from Blizz (wtf)ā€¦keep it up!

My crashes started this morning in Dazarā€™alor while I was waiting for the weekly reset. I have a 2070 SUPER that I bought recently and have had no issues with until this morning.

My game is crashing every couple of minutes on the dot. At first I was getting some sort of error with the category ACCESS_VIOLATION, but now Iā€™m getting the standard ā€œWorld of Warcraft has stopped workingā€ Windows error message.

My DxDiag is too long to post here (character limit), but Iā€™d be happy to send it to someone if they could direct me.

Iā€™ve tried disabling all addons, running DX11 legacy and no background applications, putting my NVidia control panel into debug mode, etc.

Not sure what happened, but Iā€™m hoping this will help. Going to try to roll-back my drivers as that seems to have some success here.

Edit: The error message was an ERROR #138 (0x8510008a) Fatal Exception. No idea if this helps, but Iā€™m guessing itā€™s a software / application issue.

This is getting ridiculous. I finally got bored of the RNG gearing system and have been playing FF 14 quite a bit. This game is superior graphics wise in pretty much every way, and is much harder to run. Any freezes? Any issues?

Zero. Not a single one. I have raided, dungeons, ectā€¦and zero freezing or graphical issues. Keep in mind my only issues are with WOW and how it runs this game.

Technically this entire expansion has been a nightmare. Removing full screen for win 7 issues and told to deal with it was one thing, but refusing to address these freezing issues is a little over the top.

So frustrated with wow right nowā€¦

  1. No. This is what caused the problem.
  2. Didnā€™t try.
  3. Didnā€™t try. Using DirectX11 before and after the problems.
  4. Didnā€™t try.
  5. No overlay programs.

WoW was working great. Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 and using DirectX11 in the game. No issues except for occasional disconnects due to my ISP having issues. I am not sure which Nvidia version I was using but it updated through windows update in July 2019. I allowed windows update to run after it was paused for a few months. These windows updates caused WoW to become frozen to the point I had to do a hard reboot. The windows updates consisted of the following: Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016; Microsoft Camera, HIDClass, Printer, SecurityDevices, and USB (usbhub3.inf); and KB4552152, KB4550945, and KB4541335.

I restored my PC to before the update and then I stupidly ran Driver Booster that updated a bunch of things and Nvidia to the 445.75 version. WoW was worse! Seemed to lock up when fighting and casting spells or clicking on NPCs. Had to do a hard reboot to get out of it. I restored my PC again, then updated Nvidia to the 445.87 version (current version for my card). I set the Nvidia Control Panel to debug mode in the help drop down menu. I played WoW for two separate half hour sessions and I didnā€™t have any issues!

I want to add that rolling back my Nvidia driverā€™s and setting Nvidia control panel to debug fixed my issue.

However, When I restarted my PC the problem continued. I made sure that the drivers hadnā€™t automatically updated, then checked the debug mode and apparently restarting your PC resets that.

I was fine doing world quests, but then I did a dungeon run and I locked up again. It is a total lockup and I have to do a hard reboot. Nvidia control panel was not in debug mode.

Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s connected or not, but I just had to delete my WTF and redo all of my characters UI and settings. My loading screen times were horrible, like over a minute to load into game and then frozen for another 10 or more seconds while the world loaded around me, once again and Iā€™m thinking itā€™s due to the crashes corrupting the wtf files.

Now that all is fresh and new again and everything is loading up really fast once more, I made a copy of my WTF folder and if it happens again, Iā€™ll just use the nice one I just put on my desktop. Iā€™m tired of having to redo all of those settings, but thankful for Bartender4.

edit 5/11 I have been crash free for over 2 weeks now. Feels good. Hoping it stays that way.

edit #2 5/13 When I redid my characters on the new WTF, I failed to change back to DX11 and am still currently running under DX12. So far, no issues.

Been following this thread for a few days now trying as many of the solutions as possible. I have a GTX 1080 and have rolled back to 442.74, enabled debug mode, and set the in-game settings to use DirectX 11 legacy. The crashes at first were only during raids or dungeons but now seem to happen randomly. I posted a thread earlier before I made these changes .

I also have a 1080ti with stuttering issues giving the event log of: ā€œDisplay driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.ā€ Have been searching far and wide for a solution, was rolling back to random drivers. This one seems to have done the trick so far. I have not enabled debug mode on the Nvidia control panel yet though. Will update this post if I still experience any stuttering.

Edit: Had one stutter with the 1080ti after about 2 hours of play time. I was just standing outside of a dungeon when it happened. Just turned on Debug mode in the Nvidia control panel to see if that helps.

All debug modes does is it sets your video card back to standard clock speeds, mem speeds ect. So basically if you got one of those ā€œSUPERCLOCKED MEGACLOCKā€ cards it simply reverts the card back to factory specs.

So if this function helps you, that merely means your card is probably stressed out due to overclocks. Gigabyte sent me 2 cards in a row with this problem, and I had to manually reset the card back to its OG specs.

I have tested this problem thoroughly , and this issue ONLY happens in this game. I have raided in FF14 with zero issues.

The silence here that blizz is displaying here, dead silent for over 5 monthsā€¦is deafeningā€¦What is there issue this timeā€¦

My question now isā€¦ Will SL continue the same? Or will the game updates correct the issue?

Ha. Judging by the lack of care and communication here?

Yeah it is not looking good.

I am still convinced this is a driver issue on the Nvidia end, and not something Blizzard is able to fix. They cannot comment because they are unable to fix it. Make note that only a specific series of a specific video card seems to be affected. Nvidia has introduced some incompability with WoW (starting after 444.72) for Pascal / Kepler GPUs, and as we have seen more recent drivers have failed to resolve it.

Well, hereā€™s hoping that Nvidia will come out with their 450 drivers soon. Just updating the 444 isnā€™t cutting it.

Has anyone tried the newest 445.98 drivers? If so, please report.

I personally have not tried out that driver. However since they released a hotfix driver almost immediatelyā€¦does not look good lol.

Funny thing is, they are not responding to any questions about wow screen flickering, freezing, and such either. They also are deal silent about serious issues. Seems like the communication between wow and nividia is screwed up, and we are paying for it.

This is downright childish. Two million dollar companyā€™s refusing to take any responsibility and to fix / address the issue. Just covering their eyes and saying NANANANANANANA not here.

Blizzā€¦

I am close to getting a refund on shadowlands and saying to hell with this. What a bad look you guys are cultivatingā€¦

On Sunday, 5/17/20, I decided to try something different. I tried downloading the newest 445.98 drivers and remove a few addons. The driver update, of course, went smoothly.

I had noticed that the loading time once again was ridiculously long. So I looked at some of my addons. First, I saw that my latency was good, averaging in the 50ā€™s for both, and the FPS was between 105 and 190. No problem there. The addon usage was consistently over 54 MB. I donā€™t know if that has anything to do with it or not. Soā€¦ I started removing and replacing some of my addons, got my usage down to about 16-18 MB. The biggest drain seemed to be the jocys.com addon that added text to voice.

Right now, Iā€™m hanging in there with no issues so far. I do miss hearing the guild chat, but all of the changes seem to bring WoW back to a better time.

I will update here how things go over the next week or so.

ALSO!!! DELETE THE CACHE!!! I did just this one thing and now my load time from character select to loaded in is 8 seconds as compared to over 45 seconds with having to load the world in after I land in the zone. Now everything is fully loaded at 8 seconds.
