Lock or Hunter

Hey guys, I’m making this post because I’m having a difficult difficult time sign between warlock and Hunter. I’m not sure what’s between these classes will be invited more to groups when it comes to pugging M+ and when it comes to raiding yeah I know between classes. I usually look for something that has really good health capabilities and good utilities that bring utility to the group and I really like that they’re both pet classes, but I generally want the six to one and I’m not sure which one would be more worthwhile when it comes to long-term maining.

I imagine us Hunter mains will chime in here and tell you one thing, and Warlock mains will tell you … the other thing. I’ll try to be objective though, heh.

If we’re talking utility, Hunter brings Bloodlust (which is great for getting into the occasional pug), and their traps these days can lockdown a target, knock a bunch up, they have bursting shot for moving a pack elsewhere, tar trap to slow, etc. Many guides don’t take Misdirection but it is incredible at helping a mediocre pug tank round up and hold threat on burst/adds. Warlocks bring battle rez (which can technically be done by anyone buying Jumper Cables on the AH, but that costs gold), lock cookies (which are really nice), and gates. I can’t speak to their trap replacements in detail, but I believe their ability to help with kicks/pushes/etc depends a bit on their spec and I would imagine it is less.

On the survivability front, a good Warlock is really hard to kill in a key. They have all kinds of durability. Hunters are definitely squishier, but their ability to give threat to someone else and/or drop threat, mixed with a strong immunity every 3 mins gives you a bunch of get-out-of-jail-free cards. That won’t save you as much from consistent incoming aoe damage (say) than if you’re on a warlock though.

On the movement front, I think Hunters are obviously more mobile overall, but this probably also heavily depends on spec, so there’s overlap. MM Hunters are probably a bit less mobile than an Aff lock (maybe?), but nobody is more mobile than BM Hunter, and Survival hunter has two dashes (if you count their CD + harpoon) and Disengage with a short burst back plus some sprint after. I’m not a huge fan of cast times anymore really, but I do admit seeing 2x Chaos Bolts fly out of my character and slapping two different targets feels really nice.

On a theming front, that’s up to you. I’m a Hunter main and I think Warlocks are definitely cooler. Their vibe is cooler, their transmog is some of the best in the game, their stories are really fun, and their special quests are amazing.

I ended up picking Hunter, because I liked the choice of swapping between ranged and melee, the threat manipulation, bloodlust, stealth (camo), despite the theme being much less interesting to me. If you’re the type that tends to stick to a single spec, IMO you really just need to try all 6 specs and see which rotation speaks to you, and then perhaps run a few Heroics on each spec and decide how much you cared when you pulled threat or had to move or had to cancel a cast or used a lock gate in a clever way or or or.

TL;DR - We’re gonna all tell you “pick what I main”, but the real answer is probably “go try all 6 specs in a Heroic a few times.” Good luck!

Warlocks because we can summon hot people.

Hunters are stuck with foul-smelling beasts as pets.

I dont think they are people, they are demons lol

Demons are people.

(Except the Demons that are dogs and the Demons that are horses and the Demons that are bats.)

I’m a Demon. I’m a person

Down, horny demon.

Hunter

Warlock

Warlock

Both!

Whichever you enjoy but of these, I love both destruction and marksmanship and main the hunter.

Other factors that went into my decision: shamans are rare and evokers don’t exist so it’s easier to win mail loot in raids, vs cloth and the million mages and priests out there. Also, lock has an interrupt while casting which I miss dearly when playing the hunter. But the demo interrupt is 30s not 24s and the survival is melee with a 15s melee interrupt.

Everyone should have a hunter, you can switch off and farm all day long.

I like hunters for farming old content, it’s fast and efficient.

Warlocks are super fun, so you should probably make one of those also.

Warlock is more durable over all.
Hunter has Feign Death which is pretty nifty.

Bloodlust will get you more M+ invites than anything else, and the myth of Hunter being “squishy” is not a thing anymore, they have huge healthpools, many defensives and overall good utility.

The only thing that’s gonna get you invites as Warlock is being the only sumstone bot in a raid

Pack Leader is scuffed Diabolist.

So me, maining a mage, would go Warlock for Mythics. I play my Hunter for solo content or Delves.

The reason behind it is because imagine powerful NPCs getting their butt handed to them by someone wearing cloth.

If run speed is a factor, I would say the hunter wins the foot race.

Nah, we have a 70% increased speed buff that lasts forever if you have some sort of healing source

Hunters (at least BM) have 2 walls (basically your resolve but 2 charges on lower cd’s) an immunity, 2 heals, and a hp extension via fort of the bear, feign death (shadowmeld effect) plus the ability to self dispel twice.

In higher keys i’ve noticed it’s easier for hunters to stay alive nowadays over warlocks. But i play a MW so i don’t get to have a true external which might be the other reason xD

I prefer Warlocks, but for all your intents and purposes, both are very good and kinda on par.

I think it comes down to flavour between these two imho.

Lock. You bring summons for raid and healthstones for both raid and M+. You will get invited to raids purely to be the summon bot for any replacements, and pugs will love you for it. For M+ you bring lock gate which can be used for some pretty cool skips. Also, i see less dks/dh/locks than I do mage/druid/hunter, so rolling on tier tokens has less competition from my experience.

Only irresponsible / unloving hunters disregard giving their pets regular baths. My giant turtle demands her weekly splash in the water.

To add my hat into the pile: I think you should go with Warlock.

That’s me, but I main mage.
I’d easily pick hunter if I had to though, for the sheer versatility, better CC, pet utility/customization, and the option of melee DPS, even if I’ll never use it.

No demons are not people,

Demons are typically conceived of as spiritual beings that oppose God or the divine, often associated with evil, wickedness, and misfortune.
