A lot of it is just Covid anxiety. You can only keep people bound up so much for so long, no mater how serious the reason. Europe has been having protests due to increased restrictions creating a self fueling cycle.

Again - masks do little and actually encourage people to do more risky things because they think “oh I have a mask on…I’m good”. Social distancing and good hygiene is what truly helps.

You’re right, masks do not do much in the grand scheme of things. They only slow a spread, not stop it.
Still, it’s important to wear them, because even if you can save one life wearing one, it was worth it.
