Is there a way to do that, other than holding down the mouse and sliding them? They don’t always snap into place when you do it that way.

There is no sort function other than manually dragging them around, no.
I also want to note that addons cannot help with this. Because addons do not load until you’re in the game, there is no way to load addons on the character select screen.

When you click on a character name you will see yellow triangles off to the side, you can also use those to move characters up and down the list.

Ja. I had forgotten I could do that - and it would work I think just click on the ones with the highest numbers and they should fall in place. Duh! Thanks, Kyzera
