Listening to feedback doesn't mean doing exactly what you want

Too many people think that Blizzard “listening to feedback” means doing exactly what the forum masses think is best for the game.

I’m a professional software engineer. As part of my job I listen to normal users explain what they want me to build and then convert those wants into the constraints and requirements of the system. The thing is, my users do not know anything about writing code or designing software. They often don’t know exactly what they want, or aren’t able to describe their vision to others in a way that doesn’t require lots of guesswork on my part. They don’t know what can and can’t be done given the constraints of time, hardware, manpower etc.

The forums is a minority of WoW players, and it’s full of people who would be awful game designers if given the chance. Building software, any software, is very hard. Turning software into art that people can enjoy is even harder.

Blizzard’s job is to listen to feedback and then incorporate that feedback into the game by filtering, transforming, and synthesizing it with all of the information they have that we don’t have, the constraints of the system, and the limits of time they have. It doesn’t mean the users get exactly what they ask for, because often what they ask for would have unintended consequences that they can’t foresee, because they don’t do this for a living.

My advice to people on the forums - don’t assume that Blizzard isn’t listening. They probably are, and have good reasons for the decisions that they make.

That is all.

You can’t have this many people playing a game and expect to make everyone happy. Too many people get upset over one or two things that they don’t like but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t making a bunch of others happy. Happy players don’t tend to come to the forums to start “Everything is cool” topics. I think the ones who enjoy the game most are the ones who realize you can’t have everything your own way, and appreciate the parts they do enjoy.

That’s not to say you can’t give critical feedback. Which is different from losing it over things not going your way.
