Liquid's raid addons tied to their weakaura are gated behind Patreon

The 2 addons are being gated behind the $10 tier on their patreon and then linking your patreon to your discord to get the addons to work properly.

Not entirely sure what the feeling is on this but this seems like a really big gray area that we should probably get some clarity on sooner than later.

Its against the ToS for WoW. WoW ToS allow creating Addons if there distribution is free.

Who cares stop being a Karen and just don’t use it. Report them for breaking ToS and move on.

It’s wild that some people expect others to spend hours tinkering with UI profiles and even modding and get angry if people choose to monetize their labor.

It’s actually against TOS.

Blizzard even disabled some addons from being used when they were found to be behind a paywall in the past and today those addons are free again.

MDT tried to do this in SL and they got blocked by Blizzard.

Well, the addon is weakauras - which is free - and the development Liquid does is a derivative product of that addon.

It’s a little more legally complicated than “The WOW TOS says free” - and I don’t think either side is really motivated to fight over this issue - especially since Blizzard presumably would either not be seeking any money - (or they would have to show damages (and the race to world first is actually a positive for them) )

That’s if they go after them legally, but they don’t have to. It’s their game and they can break addons if they violate ToS. If it goes through WA then Blizzard can tell their devs to either block it or they will block all of WA. Addons work because Blizzard gives them privileges to certain API data.

ToS explains the rules, not the ethics or morality of them.

You need the morality of the rules explained to you?

Don’t think Blizzard cares, they just removed the post in general discussion. Guess we know where they stand.

Discussing potential ToS violations is against forum rules isn’t it? Specifically, directly calling out a perpetrating party. That’s why any thread about it will be removed.

Can’t have bad PR for their esports marketing angle that’s advertisement for the game.
