Just wondering what version of battlenet is best used for Ubuntu Mate 18.04 - Windows version or Mac?
Running battle net (and any Blizz game) depends on a layer of software that translates the intended OS into the underlying Linux OS.
That layer exists, and is fairly robust, for Windows. It’s called Wine, and it has several variants intended for gaming use.
The only equivalent for MacOS is a project called Darling. According to its current blogs, it’s under development but it only “Almost” supports GUI apps. Which means that the battlenet desktop app won’t run, let alone the games.
Sounds like the only real option is the Windows version, after you get the appropriate Wine-based runtime environement set up.
I won’t be describing it. I haven’t tried running Wine in a decade, although I have lots of Linux systems in the house – they’re just not for gaming. But there is a lot of LInux gaming expertise in this forum, so someone competent will be by shortly.
Install the Windows version.
Use Lutris to install the game (look it up, it has installers).
Post back if you wouldn’t mind and post your results, if you got it working, if not, what system you’re on. Asking because I’m interested in hearing what issues you had if any. I’ve been using Linux Mint on an older laptop and like it better then Ubuntu, I think it’s got better options, easier access to hardware settings, and over all seems more clean to me. I have not moved it over to my main box yet for gaming reasons and for WoW specifically so curious how it went.
I just use stock Wine-staging, with Opensuse Linux.
You would be using Windows Wow/Battlenet App, of course.
In my case, the latest version wine-staging 5.0~rc3-lp150.1080.1 , gives me lower FPS. So I went back to 4.4-lp150.614.1.
I’m not sure how it is done in ubuntu, but in OpenSuse you can do
zypper search -s wine-staging
v | wine-staging | package | 5.0~rc3-lp150.1080.1 | x86_64 | Wine
i+ | wine-staging | package | 4.4-lp150.614.1 | x86_64 | Emulators
The top one shows the latest, while the second one shows the version I have installed (other versions are also listed.
When I do
zypper dup
to update, it wants to install the newest one with other stuff.
Then I can do
zypper in --oldpackage wine-staging(whatever version)
If I want to use an earlier version.
Got the windows version working on Ubuntu mate 18.04. Sadly the laptop I use appears to be too much of a potato to run beyond 0 frames a second! Lutris installation made me hit some roadblocks, but these were very simple to overcome.
Also stupidly I’ve installed it on an ssd card. On the windows partition (I duel boot) I’ve installed to the HDD and that runs fine.
I’ll have to move the Linux card installation to the Linux HDD partition to see if it makes a difference.
Mostly I was wondering if Mac or PC could make a performance difference.
