Lines of Succession: The Best and the Worst

Velen is supposedly immortal. No one will need to succeed him. Think that’s what he’s referencing.

that would make more sense, yeah. i guess erazmin also wins the lottery, then.

But IT WAS NOT A DEMOCRACY!

Even when it was destroyed by Archimonde?

I’m sure after the Third War the mages of the Kirin Tor had more on their plate than “the horde” which had fled to the other side of the planet by that point.

When the Aspect of Magic declares war on all mage kind, what do you think he was meant to do?

Although immortal in WoW’s sense is not “can never die regardless of cause” and is instead “can’t die from natural means, such as aging or disease”. As evidenced by the countless Night Elves that died during the WotA and the Third War. Where they were immortal for both.

So if someone were to stab Velen and he dies to the wound, then he would need a successor.

You seen Velen lately? He has a new entourage of body guards. No one is getting to him (except maybe 10-40 murder hobos, but besides the point)

Or how about Velen himself, who died in the WoD timeline and gave leadership to Yrel.

Draenei are the one race where replacing Velen with a council would actually make sense. Either a new triumvirate or a new exarch council if Velen were to die at some point. Both options have actual story backing and not just randomly pulled out because Blizzard forgot to develop forsaken characters other than Sylvanas.

fwiw, the desolate council does have a lore precedent, it’s just that the precedent occurred entirely within a novel and so no one knows abt it, much less cares

And AU Valen DID die. to be succeeded by Y’Rel.

Oh I remember this conversation. Yeah, immortality is defined differently, not just in WoW but in general. There’s biological immortality, which means you simply can’t die od old age, and “Complete Immortality,” according to TV Tropes, where nothing could ever possibly kill you, among other types.

Velen is most likely the former.

This is a general problem with many Horde races considering most our original leaders never had a family and not a clear line of succession either. That is how we ended up with the occasional “I don’t even know who that guy is lol.”

It sticks the most with Talanji, Vol’jin and Sylvanas since their endings were very much insultig to anyone actually taking 5 minutes to dive deeper into the story behind all those changes.
