Limits on Flagging Posts

Under the current system, each character has a limit of something close to 5 flags within a 24 hours period that they can use to identify posts that they feel are a violation of the forum code of conduct (i.e. trolling, inappropriate, violent, abusive, etc.). However, if you switch posting characters, you have 5 flags on the new character. Switch again and you have 5 more. So effectively, with very little effort, you have virtually unlimited flags.

The upcoming changes makes our forum identity our Bnet rather than our posting character. This severely limits our ability to flag a post that we may feel warrants moderator attention. We will now only get 5 flags total. That seems awfully low. There are some very good and honest regular posters on these forums who want to help keep the community clean and friendly. But handcuffing them with limited flags makes it impossible for them to help the moderators to the best of their ability.

Please consider increasing the number of flags to 10 or even 20. As I said, currently it’s basically unlimited, so setting it at 20 would still curb spam flagging. Another option might be to display when a post has been flagged for moderator attention. Don’t identify the flagger, of course, but at least other people would know that the post has already been sent up for review and they can save their flags for other posts that may be in violation.

I think it should be the same amount as you get in game, which is basically unlimited. Though the amount of posts on the forums is less than the players in game, there is no shortage of posts that may violate rules in a day especially around controversial topics. Limiting total reports is bad, but maybe they could limit how many times in quick succession to avoid problems just like it is in game.

I’d ordinarily agree with you, but I could see an issue if someone decided they didn’t like a certain thread and just flagged every single post in the thread, just to see if they could get a moderator to lock it. 20 flags in a rolling 24 hours period should be more than enough. Five, however, seems way too low. It’s almost as though they want to reduce reports in order to reduce moderator workload.

Generally that doesn’t work, it requires multiple people reporting the OP post for it to become unlisted until investigated and it’s worked that way since they updated the forums.

Dunno, seen plenty of topics where there’s hundreds of posts that violate rules in a couple hour period.

Yes, less work, less participation in forums from toxicity, less feedback taken also = less workload. Does make the forums a worse place to collect feedback overall when there’s toxic responses to most feedback threads as there is now.

Yeah… I wasn’t referring to graying out a particular post. I’m thinking people might flag every single post in the thread, regardless of the content, hoping that a moderator will just lock the thread rather than actually try to go through every flag and assess them post by post. Limiting it to 20 at least curbs that behavior somewhat while still giving plenty of opportunity to address inappropriate conduct. Limiting it to five, however, just handcuffs the community members who are honestly trying to make the forums a better place.

Yeah, that is a problem, but I guess the hope is that with 20 flags per person, there would still be enough to get much of it cleaned up. That said, if they said the flags would continue to be unlimited (just as they are now), I’d be ok with that too. I just felt 20 flags was a reasonable compromise.

Well, I hope that’s not what’s happening here (but it wouldn’t surprise me).
