I ask carefully because I don’t want to start any strong negativity or flaming threads. I genuinely do not understand why this is.
I’ve noticed an abundance of dislike for Golden’s books, but I don’t understand why. What is it that people don’t like?
Please answer as respectfully as possible.
Also, to balance things out: what do you like about other Warcraft authors (and who are they)? I’m mostly asking about the novels but since I have read a few graphic novels, those can be included.

Damn, I thought you meant just authors, I was gonna say I like Philip K. Dick and H.P. Lovecraft. I’ve never read a wow book. I read a D&D book once in high school and it made me almost want to quit playing D&D so I avoid that sort of thing.

I don’t usually dislike authors, I dislike stories. But I’ll say, there’s one author I dislike, it’s George Martin.

Golden as in Christie Golden?
She seems to get good reviews from my brief search.
That’s the person that wrote game of thrones ya?
Christie Golden is fine. There’s nothing wrong with her writing. People just like to hate things. I enjoyed her last wow book. I dislike Knack more than her but I wouldn’t even say I “dislike” his work.
As long as there is no info-dumping (an unforgiveable sin afaic), I can forgive a lot.

He’d need to write a book to be an author, and that’s not something he’s done in over a decade.

His paintings were pretty bland too.
Richard Knaak’s books aren’t that great either. Though in Knaak’s defense, he didn’t try to dominate Europe or commit genocide. So he’s got that going over Mustache Man.

He’s written books.
Just . . . not A Song of Ice And Fire.
It’s not her writing. It’s her personal views.

Most stories and authors aren’t really super liked until well after publication.

I’ve read exactly one StarCraft book and one Diablo book. They we’re okay, but didn’t add anything for me.
I miss reading my Morrowind books you could find in the game. Some even gave you spells or clues.
I’d rather have a World of Warcraft in game neutral faction library where we could read stuff.

There’s a number of reasons ranging from realistic to outright absurd. For starters, a lot of people kind of attribute her with the lore of the game because she writes the books. So when she contradicts herself in writing because Blizzard’s understanding of their own lore is everchanging they choose to take it out on her.
Then instead of defending herself in a civil manner, she has a tendency to just get feisty and sanctimonious on any detractors. So when she’s trying to “girlboss it up and show this fool his place” she tends to draw even more negative attention to herself. Argues back and gets to an increasingly absurd and petty level about it, then will do one of two things in response. Either make a tweet basically crying about how she’s the victim in all of it and she did not deserve the backlash she got despite acting in a way that directly encourages it then lock her account for a day or two saying she’s being harassed, or she’ll just lock her account then make the sob story tweet a few days later.
She basically wants to have her cake and eat it to where you should respect her because she puts so much love and effort into contributing to WoW’s extended lore, but you also can’t criticize her because she’s just writing what she’s told if it comes off as bad and it isn’t her fault.
She’s just… there’s a very delicate line for women between being assertive and able to quickly, and decisively shut someone down at a moment’s notice, and being a complete see you next Tuesday. She’s very far on the latter side and envisioning herself as the furthest on the former side she could be.

My favourite 2 wow books are tides of war and before the storm.
My least favourite is shadows rising.
So those authors

I want to listen to a Golden book on audiobook. I definitely can’t judge not having heard one though.
Twilight is a better love story than Harry Potter. Lol.

I greatly appreciate all of the replies and special thanks to Barooh for giving some solid reasons. I didn’t want to say this on the outset but Golden is one of my favorite authors and so I was really wondering why people seemed to hate her writing and be so down on her when, imo, she does a wonderful job telling a story. I can see how people opinions would change based on an author’s personal views and interactions.
I have my complaints and loves about Warcraft authors. I adore Knaak but his battle scenes can stretch a bit and get a little repetitive. I love Golden but I do have an issue with her lack of clear statements of time (the Sylvanas book threw me because it jumped back and forth through time and there definitely wasn’t a clear indication of this…same issue with Arthas).
