As we all probably know, lightwell is pretty lackluster. You need to click it and c̶h̶a̶n̶n̶e̶l̶(not channeled) h̶o̶p̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶h̶o̶t̶ ̶i̶s̶n̶’̶t̶ ̶t̶a̶k̶e̶n̶ ̶o̶f̶f̶ pray that you don’t take damage for 10 seconds. This is not a thread advocating for change of the ability, I just want to hear some theories on what and how this ability is supposed to be used. Like its design philosophy.
I can see it being used in the back of a raid for dps to click on it, but they will be out for 10 seconds if they are lucky enough to stand still for that long. Is this supposed to be used out of combat or between waves of npcs/fights?
It’s there as of the 1.9 priest revamp but only terribad priests would spec into it as it was absolutely terrible. So to answer OP’s question, there is no scenario where it should be used because no priest should spec into the ability. Even if you don’t want to take divine spirit because another priest in your group has it there are better places to place the point.
Only time I ever saw it used to ANY effect was just having the priest drop it on the Warlocks so they didn’t have to bother healing them later. It definitely wasn’t channeled either, but you could spam click it and use up all of the charges if you didn’t pay attention. Even the devs thought it sucked I guess.
Well any fight with any sort of transition would work fine, and I like the Warlock idea. Lets them heal as needed when optimal without requiring attention.
In any case, I’m still curious to know what the design philosophy of this ability was. It being taken off from damage made it seem like it was channeled
We tried it. It didn’t take off. No one used it. They put that point elsewhere.
The idea was to give raids a top-up option, but nobody ever used it. It was a good idea with really bad execution.
Lightwell was never channeled. They cast it. It sat there glowing. Damaged raid members were supposed to run over and click it for a small heal. It worked just fine, but nobody ever used it.
The idea behind it was great.
The problem was that vanilla wow was full of hunters that would afk auto-shot, locks that would health tap to nothing and then die immediately, and any other number of just plain idiots that would not even use the thing.
No DPS or Tank is ever going to stop what they are doing and run over to a Lighwell to generate a small heal on their own. That 31 point talent is better spent on Divine Spirit in the Disc tree, or anywhere else for that matter.
This is the only time I can ever remember using one. Between the lackluster healing and accidental double-clicks using it up, it didn’t do more for us than a drain life channel or two would have.
