It makes no sense that destroying the Lich King’s helm of dominion makes a portal or w/e to the other world… because that item was created in WC3, so before it was created why was the portal not open? Also seeing Sylvannas easily overpower the Lich King was nauseating.
The helm’s power couldn’t overcome the power of Ret’con.
I don’t really care about her winning the fight but the portal opening from the helm being broken is a little confusing
Think of it more like shattering the border between our realm and that one. Like what happened with Deepholm.
My theory is that since that helm was originally a prison for Ner’zhul’s soul, yanking him out of the Shadowlands and imprisoning him created a bridge between the two realms. Shattering the helm broke the bridge and weakened the borders. I don’t think it’s a portal.
Normally both dimensions are separated from each other. But the Helm of Domination built itself to be a powerful link between the Shadowlands and the living world. It’s an artificial one. The Lich King was able to see through both sides, hence the massive Scourge army he created.
When the Helm was destroyed the energy was great enough that it blasted a hole through the veil. The link shattered and left an empty void in its wake that can be traveled through.
Ner’zul was caught by Kil’jaeden in the Twisting Nether.
He was captured there, but was ripped apart. Not sure that has much to do with it. His soul was bonded to the helm which commands the Undead. So it makes sense to me that a helm connected to the realm of death with a dead soul bonded to it would be a bridge between the two.
Sylvanas also has some power over life and death. Her breaking the helm was probably the magic combo.
I suspect we will zap our necklaces to fix something.
She was never nearly as powerful as the Lich King, so a rather large story pitfall
You must have missed her 9 year powering up montage.
Nah, just garbage story writing, sigh…
Don’t worry about it. I’m sure every important detail on that will be covered in a book or other form of media that isn’t the game.
The Burning Legion probably linked it to the Shadowlands to boost its necromantic potency.
I don’t understand why people see the cinematic and think it’s some sort of retcon.
Bovar didn’t have frostmourne that was what gave the lich king so much power
I mean, you can say what you want, but it IS a retcon.
There’s no way the writers back in the warcraft 3 days were all like “oh ya, and when you break the helm it totally opens up the boundary between reality and the shadowlands because of how the legion made it.”
I doubt the writers in WotLK days were thinking that too. It’s very clearly something that was made up around the time of legion at the earliest. And that’s being generous.
Bovar was never near as powerful as Arthas was with Frostmourne. Bovar may have took on the name and the crown but was hardly ever the true power of the Lich King.
They also never said that it wouldn’t open up a gate to the Shadowlands.
New information isn’t a retcon.

We’re talking about the Helm, not Bolvar

Right? it would make no sense to. The lich king was never intended to allout rule. Just a stepping stone for the burning legion.
In it’s creation it couldve been made into a link so i could channel so much necromantic energy. So essentially before it was a wall between the two realms but when Kil’jaeden made the lich king the helm of domination became a door in that wall. Breaking it ripped the door open.
That’s my current theory/headcanon.
today’s deep dive said we’d learn more about the lore/origins of frostmourne and the helm of domination
