Liberation of Undermine is peak WoW raiding

So, I gotta say, Blizz knocked it out of the park with LoU. I had more fun raiding last night that I’ve had in quite some time.

First boss, Vexie, was pretty standard, but I loved the absolute troll moment, when she busts into the boss arena unexpectedly. Ran over my entire raid group. I was standing right in the middle, so she did a full donut around me, before splatting me with the back wheel.

Cauldron of Carnage was another winner. Loved the concept of it.

Rik Reverb… okay, I can tell that guy’s going to be annoying on Heroic, but he was fun enough on normal. Honestly, he’s getting carried by his A+ name.

Bunkjunker was chaos incarnate, but I found the trash rolling fun.

Sprocketmonger gave me Hans and Franz flashbacks, in a very good way.

The One Armed Bandit is such an absurd idea for a boss fight. I loved how wacky it is. Also, bonus points for him having a mace in his loot tabled called Best In Slots. (ironically, that mace IS my best in slot.)

Mug’Zee was probably one of the more “standard” fights in the raid, and definitely one that’s gonna be a challenge on Heroic.

And I’ll be honest, my guild didn’t get a chance to do an honest pull on Gallywix before the end of the night (we had one YOLO pull with no explanation of mechanics, got him to 60%), but unless he’s the worst final boss in the game’s history, I don’t see how this raid is anything but incredible.

The casino, in particular, was so much fun to progress though. Just tons of wild stuff in every corner. Also, the goblin racers on motorcycles in the outdoor area, that was another fun troll moment. The raid starting in the Incontinental Hotel is also appreciated, having all those vendors, repairs, transmog, and tier token exchange all in one place is definitely appreciated.

Just… golf clap. This is definitely in my top 5 favorite raids now.

You did good this time, Blizz. Ya did good.

I think I ended up completing the raid across five different raid groups, and every one of them was having fun. Other than raging at the trash, which admittedly is a bit absurd at times. My only complaint about the Gallywix fight is that he needed more voice lines. He honestly should have never shut up the entire fight, but mocking people when they die is a nice touch.

That moment with Vexie was amazing. It was sad because I had JUST planted out a Feast Table for everyone, but just seeing 3/4th of the raid get wiped was amazing, and while it was sad about the table, it was one of those “gotcha’s” that doesn’t feel cheap since its right there at the start. You just respawn and are like “Okay, future note, stay by the hotel entrance. Let’s not do that again.”

Cauldron was just a fun spectacle of a fight. Even though I didn’t understand the mechanics (as I was healing and was more focused on not getting stunned by the build-up) it was neat seeing them go toe-to-toe every other minute.

Rik was interesting, the second I saw the “jump” mechanic I was instantly taken back to Anseruk but far more involved in comparison to her fight where it was just two hops. Though, man was it annoying trying to heal during those jump portions and running to each amplifier (especially if they were placed just a bit too far apart.)

Strix was where we first hit a wall last night. The bombs kept going off, giving a raid-wide DOT that could not be cleansed and lasted for an entire minute. (Just a useful tip, if you are picked to play discount Katamari with rolling the junk balls around, you can pick up enemy mobs and they do increase your size. So if you’re struggling to find trash to pick up to increase your size in time before the bomb goes off, go for the enemy ads, your raid will thank you later. :3)

But besides that, once we understood that was where we were messing up we got through it after around six or seven attempts.

Monger was really fun dodging lasers on the conveyor belt. Ended up getting the additional challenging achievement from him that I believe is tied to Glory of insert raid here achievement.* Possibly. But, still, was chaotic fun in a tight enclosed space.

The One Armed Bandit? I agree, was such an absurd idea. Like, seriously? Are we seriously about to fight a sentient rigged slot machine as a boss where his gimmick is all about inserting coins and working to ensure no repeat combination shows up? I love it. Dumb, but enjoyable, and very creative for a casino raid.

Mug’Zee… dear Elune THIS guy should have been the final boss. The amount of wipes on him alone easily surpassed the wipes on any other boss in the raid. When looking back his mechanics aren’t even that mechanically deep. Just two different forms of soaks, take them to the wall to minimize the impact they have on the arena, and do not get him caught in the Gaol soak, less the elementals enrages. But between the soak mechanic, the adds, the AOE’s, and the permanent affixes onto the ground via the soaks, he was a monster of an encounter that wiped us more than any other.

And lastly, Gallywix? Now in comparison, despite there being more to him, he didn’t feel nearly as “what are we looking at?” when in comparison to his bodyguard. Still difficult, still wiped several times across two different attempts (yesterday and then earlier today) but felt more manageable in comparison to Mug’Zee.

But honestly, despite everything, the raid was and is very enjoyable. Difficult, but it feels like its on the same level as Palace where likely come mid-way through the season guilds and avid pug groups/players will have the mechanics down generally smoothly. Some of the touches was the casino itself, which felt like a glitzy casino that barely is able to hide the veneer and corruption under the gold. And the racers/motorcyclists outside just waiting to splatter an unassuming raider? Lol.

My only complaint is that there’s perhaps a bit too many mobs outside. It was not uncommon for people to be immediately dismounted from their cars for approaching a group of mobs that were around a corner while trying to avoid the drivers on the road. But overall, the raid is great, really glad I got to partake in a raid early on in its release window instead of coming in late. Learning boss mechanics and just good old fashion trial and error is a lot of fun.

This is one of my favorite raids ever, so far. And I came into this patch expecting to hate it because it’s goblins.

Might as well ask here. Is Vexie not available in LFR or am I missing something?

They’re not in the first wing we got, no.

Sadly, no, LFR players will for some reason have to wait till March 25th to be able to play out the entire raid from start to finish. I don’t get this decision. As it will essentially ensure that LFR players will be staggered pretty heavily with the renown track. I know Blizzard said that there will be a catch-up mechanic in place, but by how much? And is there a threshold?

goblins are what pandaren were trying to be but actually done right.

I don’t have any idea what that means but I’m glad you like it.

my guild had an absolute blast- people getting hit in drive bys was hilarious too, so many deaths just crossing the road

They really went all-in on the Goblin theme for this patch and IMO they absolutely nailed it. I love all the fun and silly NPC/ability names, i.e. the tank swap for Vexie literally being called “Tank Buster”, the "Sub Woofer mechawolf mobs, or the hobgoblins who do an AOE ability called “corrosive flatulence” which, if you ask my wife, is something that I do IRL far too often for her liking.

It’s also a nice change of pace from what I assume will be a return to a “darker” aesthetic next raid tier (not talking about the story, as the story in Undermine is plenty grim, more so the music/visuals/theming).

We’re having fun.

I knew this was going to be wild and fun ride the moment 90% of my raid group got wiped out by the boss intro. We laughed our butts off. Overall, it’s a good raid so far. We’ve only seen the first four bosses, but we’re having fun.
