That sounds like fun. Star Wars isn’t my favorite thing in the whole world it’s in the “all right” section for me. I like things that are extremely lore intensive over pure action. And while star wars has a bunch of novels and comics that go more into that the main media unfortunately always seems to just center around things like empire vs rebels ect, similar conflicts since 1977
Growing up I never found a character I could relate to.
Like, I was a stealth trans guy that had been bullied for being too masculine. I didn’t even know FtM was a thing until I was in my 30s.
The only female character of note was the princess and the whole skimpy slave outfit was gratuitous and distasteful to me. The fact that lots and lots and lots of people cosplay that is really giga cringe. The very young me didn’t care if she killed Hutt for it. I just couldn’t connect with her. I saw her as a damsel in distress (“help me Obi Wan Kenobi you’re my only hope,” being enslaved by the hutts) and a piece of eye candy for the guys instead of a role model. I wanted strong independent women as role models when I was a young person hiding their masculinity and trying hard to girl despite it not fitting me at all due to bullying.
Yea. There’s a lot I could say about the original trilogy and how I feel about it’s characters but I know it’s a dear series to some people and I don’t want to offend anyone so I’ll leave it there XD.
There’s a few things to consider when trying to explain blizzards response to this. Kotaku could be waiting in the wings with hit piece about how Blizzard is a horrible anti LGBT+ company and It could also be an employee and they don’t want to deal with the internal power games that would result in taking action.
While I kind of agree with the eye candy thing when the orginal trilogy was made, as the lore has been expanded over the years the hutts sadly do this to any femles that they enslave, no matter how strong and independent they are. It is just how strong of a crime sydicate they are. You either follow the rules or you die. There are others to take your place. They make me think of Star War’s version of glatic human trafficing among other things.
And as for what happend eiler today. I have had a very, very bad last few days. I don’t know what I am going to do but I just need time. I had a very bad depressive episode today and if it wasn’t for a good freind I would still be in a dark place. (To that freind thank you. I know you lurk here.)
Kotaku isn’t spying on the WoW forums looking for ways to make Blizz look bad. The few times they’ve gotten in trouble for how they’ve treated the LGBT community, they’ve totally deserved it, like back in 2006 when you weren’t really even allowed to advertise your guild as being LGBT-friendly.
Also here’s a more detailed article about it from the defunct website that broke the story (not sure it’s okay to copy+paste the whole thing)
Excerpt:
In Newsweekly obtained all of Andrews’ e-mails between herself and Blizzard. Numerous requests for comment from Blizzard were not returned. Here’s the sequence of events:
Andrews’ original posting read: “OZ [the name of her guild] is recruiting all levels ¦ We are not ‘GLBT only,’ but we are ‘GLBT friendly’! ([probably defunct link removed by Pet])”
In her follow-up letter to the company, Andrews explained that there was an obvious misunderstanding and that she was not insulting anyone, but merely recruiting for a “GLBT friendly” guild.
The response from Blizzard was, “While we appreciate and understand your point of view, we do feel that the advertisement of a ‘GLBT friendly’ guild is very likely to result in harassment for players that may not have existed otherwise. If you will look at our policy, you will notice the suggested penalty for violating the Sexual Orientation Harassment Policy is to ‘be temporarily suspended from the game.’ However, as there was clearly no malicious intent on your part, this penalty was reduced to a warning.”
Blizzard’s stance was clear that recruiting for a guild using “GLBT” was inappropriate as, the company said, it may “incite certain responses in other players that will allow for discussion that we feel has no place in our game.”
Gamer John Blatzheim, who heard of Andrews’ situation, e-mailed Blizzard to express his concern of a double standard that game masters would send her a warning that she could not use “GLBT” as an advertisement to express a safe place for gay gamers after an incident a few months ago where a plague occurred within the game and players yelled in general chat, “Don’t get the AIDS!”
“Many people are insulted just at the word ‘homosexual’ or any other word referring to sexual orientation,” Blizzard responded to Blatzheim in an e-mail. “Also to discriminate against other players, such as not allowing any heterosexuals into the guild simply because of their sexual orientation, could cause extreme offense to a large percentage of our players and should be avoided.”
Stonewall Champions and The Spreading Taint, two large gay guilds are currently formulating a letter they plan to submit to Blizzard requesting a more detailed explanation as to the intent of this reinterpretation and execution of the sexual harassment rule. As the spirit of the harassment rule seems to have been reinterpreted from protecting GLBT players, to keeping them silent.
There are various types of servers that players can experience the game on. One of the options is to play on a role-playing server where players actually play as their characters, rather than through their characters. “We have determined that advertising sexual orientation is not appropriate for the high fantasy setting of the World of Warcraft and is therefore not permitted” was another of Blizzard’s responses. Does this mean that if a player has a character on a role-playing server that they play as gay that would be violating the policy?
2006?
A lot’s changed since 2006.
How things worked 16 years ago really doesn’t apply. Today there’s some serious liabilities with appearing to take any sort of stand on these issues, justified or not. And given that provoking a response is pretty standard way activist push causes forward it’s a possibility that is at least a concern.
how is this thread still active?
the “+” has been the most poison thing ever. not because its wrong but because it is forced so hard. Is i wrong?
“You are wrong. The + is the mark of inclusiveness.”
“You are wrong, because you are wrong.”
“I am forcing nothing. I am only correcting your data.”
zeroosss datas it has showen
I hope things get better for you Alice. Lord knows 9 times out of 10 social media is more harm then good on mental health it’s thrown me into more then enough depressive episodes with long binge drinking nights sobbing in the dark.
It’s always good to take breaks and hyper focus on a hobby or something you enjoy.
For me it’s usually drawing or nature walks. Sometimes it’s sewing a new part to my fursuit I still haven’t finished… I only got the head and curly tail done and the foam for the puffy hands but still haven’t furred those… Making a partial but it’s taking longer then my full body one I made years back.
But taking up a creative craft is a good way to ease stress.
Much love I hope you feel better soon! Rooting for ya!
data please
It’s a statement on the fact the trend is people who spend more time on society al media tend to get depressed. Especially now with so much vitriolic aggression.
From experience most times it’s all bad news and doom and gloom.
then you should say stay off it
By the amount of mounting evidence from multiple sources everyone should.
Searching it brings up so many case studies on it by many sources too numerous to link lol there’s a reason people take vacations from technology in getaway retreats.
i clicked on it and its all bull crap for ads
When my fraternity class was having to put on a party, we wound up making decorations out of mason jars that we were using as LED candle holders.
One of the brothers said to me that it was kind of a bummer that the glass was clear instead of green. And I said, “we can run to Michael’s and get a bottle of modge podge for five bucks, I have green food coloring.”
What you do is you add a little bit of water and you add some food coloring, and you mix it up, and you pour it in your glass and spread it around. You can put it on the outside of the glass if you prefer. One side the jars dried overnight. I put them all on the windowsill so they could soak up the morning sun and they dried very quickly and we had a nice collection of deep green mason jar candle holders.
I can’t recommend mixing modge podge with food coloring and water or acrylic paint and water and using it to decorate things.
Food coloring dries transparent.
Acrylic dries semitransparent.
It’s so good.
omg lol this guy clicks on stuff for ads
