Trying to figure out something numbers wise.
On this rogue i main hand krol (149 top end damage) blade and offhand maladath (162 top end)
If i take maladath off and just look at my krol blade sheet damage it says 292
If i take krol blade off and put maladath in my mh it says 272
The Krol get more damage per swing from your AP than Maladath does.
Krol = base damage + ((AP/14)*2.8)
Maladath = base damage + ((AP/14)*2.2)
Keep in mind, this is mostly only for auto attacks. For instants like Sinister strike, AP is normalized. Every non-dagger one hand is treated as 2.4 speed.
It means that instead of using the actual weapon speed in the damage calculation for that attack, it uses a standard value for all weapons regardless of speed. For one handed weapons except daggers, that’s 2.4
So for sinister strike with a non-dagger one handed,
It would be:
SS bonus damage + base weapon damage + ((AP/14)*2.4)
Daggers, one handers, two handers, and ranged weapons each have their own normalized AP modifier for instant attacks.
Well, Attack power is meant to increase damage per second evenly across the board. So, its modified by attack speed so that fast weapons gain the same amount of damage per second from AP as slower ones do. This means that fast weapons get a smaller per hit bonus, because they get that bonus more often, and slow get bigger per hit bonus because they get the bonus less often.
They do, once you accept the concept that Attack power is Damage Per Second, not Damage Per Swing.
14 attack power increases damage per second by 1. If you swing every 1 second, then you get one bonus damage.
If you swing every 3 seconds, well, the first two seconds you weren’t hitting anything so were getting 0 damage per second from your AP. To get that back to 1 damage per second, they add that missed damage back to the weapon. So now you get 3 damage every time your weapon swings.
But you still got the same amount of bonus damage from AP. The 1.0 speed weapon swings 3 times and gets 1 bonus damage each time for 3 bonus damage. The 3.0 speed weapon swings once and gets 3 bonus damage. That way, your 14 AP increases your total damage output over time the same regardless of your weapon speed.
Now, instants were changed to normalized because it was leading to some wonky behavior. Certain weapons were really overperforming, or under performing, because of their speed. So, Blizzard changed all instants to use a fixed speed instead of actual weapon speed.
I mean i guess im just talking about raw weapon damage excluding AP (which i guess you cant really do considering its always there but)
I get why my white damage would be lower but why would my SS be lower if they are being compared based on the same weapon speed and it seems AP has no effect on SS damage because even when i have crusader i dont seem to hit with sinister strike harder. Maybe thats just how it feels
Your sister strike with Maladath should be higher. They both use the same AP ratio.
Keep in mind, that there is a lot of damage range overlap between Maladath and Krol Blade, so on any given sinister strike you could roll high with a Krol Blade or low with a Maladath so it would look like Krol did better if your sample size isn’t large enough.
If you went out and Sinister striked a few hundred times with each and averaged them, you’d see Maladath had a higher average though.
Those are ignored for AP damage calculations, otherwise there would be not much real benefit to using them. Game just uses base weapon speed or normalized weapon speed, unless it specifically mentions otherwise, like with Seal of the Crusader.
