Personally trying to balance a class based on the top 1% is silly. Of course playing the class with other high tier players will yield better results. Mage also gets a pretty nice boost from Power Infusion which most high level mages get (I think). So having the class balanced around the top 1% who receive externals for parse is not the best way to go about it. BUT I can see where you are coming from, just an opinion not bashing yours.

Mages aren’t the current best pi targets. It’s locks and unholy DKs
And disagree. Toon players know how to unlock the class potential in a way most players don’t.
But no one is arguing for buffs to Arcane? We just want the play style to change or for there to be an alternative.
The other two specs definitely need buffs, all the the buffs!
There is no NBA equivalent in WoW. The game is open to all, not just the top players. Therefore it stand to reason it shouldn’t be balanced around their performance but around what an average player can handle. The top players are going to do way more damage than average ones anyway so putting forth an argument that a class or a spec shouldn’t be buffed because 5% of players will become even more powerful than they already were is silly. It’s also irrelevant because those top end players have no one to compete with but themselves anyway.
The semantics of that argument aside, balancing a game to be too difficult for the average player is just a bad business practice because those players will quit and not play the game. FromSoftware learned that lesson with Elden Ring, arguably one of the most popular games ever. Speaking for myself only, I had never even heard of Darksouls games before Elden Ring likely because they were too difficult to be popular. They made Elden Ring more accessible and boom it’s a household name overnight. The WoW devs can learn a thing or two from that.

Respect your stance on it but other classes being better PI targets doesn’t mean much when the number one parsers are getting PI’d. My logic on that issue is balancing a class based on the top % is skewed information. Current #1 fire mage parse on mythic bosses is getting power infusion & I am not disrespecting as he/she is probably also incredibly skilled at the class, but again, looking at a small number of players in order for balancing doesn’t make sense to me. Agree classes should not be dumbed down, disagree that balancing should be catered to the top.

All levels of players can play basketball form backyard hoops to Rec leagues to travel teams to school teams college teams and the nba. There’s also eu teams as well.
This game has different levels of play and the game should be balanced around rose at the top boot the middle or the bottom.
The game isn’t difficult. It may be difficult for bad players but the game should never cater to the bad ones because every single time it has tried the expansions have been awful.
Yet when you look at logs there are multiple instances where non pi players are performing better than those pi targets.
