Hello! I am getting a new monitor. Debating between staying 1440p 27" and getting a nice upgrade to 32" 4k.
I have a 3080 ti and 5900x so compute power isn’t going to be a huge limiter.
My head is about 20 inches from the screen when I sit up properly.
I am looking for anyone with experience playing WoW with a 32" 4k monitor to give their thoughts.
-
How is it? Compared to 1440p?
-
Does it feel too big? My concern is losing visibility on things in the vision peripheral.
-
Anything specific to wow you wish you knew before upgrading to 4k? (Ie "now addon x doesn’t work/look right)
-
What level of content do you play, ie mythic raiding or super casual etc (I figured if you just faff about any resolution will be fine).
Thanks.
not 4k but i play 32" 1440p displays. the size I feel is really important and I can’t go back to smaller displays.
Never caught on to ultrawide because it makes me feel like i have to scan my vision too much.
I sit close to mine as well and I find 32" perfect for gaming. At 4k, it’s just going to be a little sharper.
I’m in exactly the same situation as you are (really want to upgrade from 27" 1440p to 32" 4k), so I’m curious about this too! Are you getting an OLED monitor?
I got the msi mag 321upx and I like it a lot. I got used to the side pretty fast, I believe. The game looks as gorgeous as WoW can look with the OLED and gloss finish on the monitor.
I’ve got 80% of my UI setup to hide out of group/combat to battle burn in. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do about the mini map because I do want that visible most of the time.
I have a 48" OLED 4k monitor (not tv) and a 34" Ultrawide. I loved the OLED for a while but 1440p is a better resolution. The benefit of 4k wasn’t worth the performance hit. It feels like we are never going to catch up to 4k either, since new games come out that constantly stress new hardware. I have been spoiled by high refresh rate gaming, so 144+ fps are something I value more than 4k. I can’t see a huge difference between 4k and 1440p either, so I went back to my Ultrawide and left my 48" monitor for my PS5.

I’ve tried it all sorts of ways, but I’ve used 4K for ages now. The biggest problem with 4K is finding a good UI resolution, because the magic 0.72 still makes things too big. Manually set it small, and you have to put some work into good sizing.
As for 32", I think it’s too small for 4K and 2560x1440 is easier to work with. My last two desk configs were 2x 32", and 42" + 27". 32" is too big to treat as a multi monitor, but too small for a big 4K at full desk depth. You can probably address that by using a monitor mount and adjusting it to taste.
WoW doesn’t respond very well to 4K. You can certainly use it to great effect, but it’s a lot of customization to take advantage of all the screen real estate since pixel perfect 0.35 is going to be a lot of fine tuning. Some windows way too small.
So I guess as TLDR; prefer a 32" at 1440P or 1600P.
Will it work if you already have it? Sure. But I recommend a monitor mount so you can get variable distance.
My system setup is identical to yours, with me using a 32" 1440p LG Ultragear.
I usually don’t consider 4k unless I’m going to use a large screen. If I were to make the upgrade to it, I’d put both screens side by side to see if I’ll see that pixelated “fuzziness”. If the difference is negligible, then I know the screen size is too small to matter. Otherwise, I’ll prioritize the refresh rate based on the average FPS across the games I play to avoid screen-tearing.
