I know this is more along the lines of “real life” than WoW (although definitely related to WoW), so I’m not sure if this is allowed here… if not please remove it.
If you’re interested in pet projects and want to start a journey with me to try to create something amazing for the WoW community, now may be your chance.
I’m looking for 2 individuals to help with a project related to WoW. I need someone with front end (HTML/CSS/Javascript/UI/UX) experience (you’re building a slick website), and someone with back end experience (Python/Go programming with experience in NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or Couchbase)(you’ll be building a pretty massive backend structure).
I’d prefer that you are currently employed in a similar position with some demonstrable experience. If you happen to fit either of these “positions” and you’re willing to spare some of your time to work on a project with me over the next few months, please add me on bnet or discord so we can chat about what I’m looking to do and what’s in it for you. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Guessing the pay is “experience and exposure”?

I don’t think this is one of those moments tbh. It’s not like OP is forcing anyone or approaching anyone for it or having the ‘you must have x experience’.
Why in the Pete would you use python or go for a backend in 2020

Cody,
It’s my understanding that Python and Go are popular languages, and in theory should be easier to maintain over the course of a project. But, I’m open to discussing other languages with someone who actually writes code for a living. I’m not dead set on any of it, it’s just an idea.
You might get a response you told us what exactly the project was… and if you pay.

At least here in Silicon Valley, there’s plenty of startups and side-project sites with Python backends, and while pure Go backends are somewhat rare there are many that use components/microservices written in it. Hell, there are some that still use Ruby on Rails. NodeJS might be the trendy thing but it’s far from the only option.
Dude, why recruit in here? These people whine and rage all day long over a video game. You’d be better off asking random people in Walmart.
I didn’t say the OP is.
The jobs, based purely on the blurb given, doesn’t sound like something one knocks out in a boring afternoon for funsies. I can’t speak for the going rates for a front end person, but even a modest back end developer is high 5 digit and in most cases 6 digit salary work.
He also stated he’d take the discussion offline on “what’s in it for you”. If there is actual money or a budget involved, why not just say? Experience tells me the discussion is along the lines of “you’ll get a cut if we somehow make it big and you’ll totally get to add this to your portfolio and slap your name on it”.
There probably is a super cool and awesome title too.
If people are interested in that arrangement or need/want the experience, more power to them. I am sure the big boys who dreamed up wowhead, icy-veins, mmo-champion, and other top sites also started off as a pipe dream too.
Ahh fair enough, I understand what you mean now.
I was a part of the efforts for creating a full translation for the last MMORPG I played. I’m in server operations IRL but it was something I dabbled in for fun.
If it was something I was doing professionally most definitely I would be charging the big bucks.
I guess it would depend on what kind of commitment OP was looking for to determine if they were looking to make something like WoWhead (which I imagine would need full time staff by now).
I am a senior software developer. Albeit, I don’t work in or live in silicon valley. Around here where I am most people use node (express) , php(laravel), or asp net core web api - with some apparently using ruby on rails. I have to say my favourite is 100% asp personally
python is one of the most popular languages period. it’s used all over the place. what a wild thing to say
That doesn’t make it good. It definitely is not.
python is a fantastic large scale data interpretation language. in tandem with django or even flask you can create very robust, powerful apis. python is well maintained, documented, and was rated the fourth most popular language in stack overflows developer survey for 2019, and 2nd most loved. you are speaking on something you know nothing of as you admitted yourself
I appreciate the back and forth debate, it’s interesting. By trade I deal more with hardware and infrastructure projects, so obviously I’m lacking on the front and back end development. I dabbled in some front end stuff, basic CSS, WordPress junk, but it’s been years ago… it just feels better to me to setup a VMware environment or SSH into a Cisco switch and setup some VLANs… you know, more I’m more of a Layer 1-7 kinda guy. Hence, the reason for the post.
As I said in my OP, if someone is interested in trying something, I’m more than happy to talk about reimbursement. This is by no means a “professional” gig; it would be classified as a side-project for all intents and purposes. No deadlines, no KPIs, just working together to build something. I’d prefer to team up with someone who actively plays WoW, as it’s easier to connect knowing what you’re building for and the kind of users of the system… Who knows, maybe you’ll get to try something new… and yeah, if it turns out to be a good project then you’ll get to slap it in your portfolio if that’s your thing. If I don’t find anyone interested, then maybe I’ll do as Tuurtlez suggested and go on down to Wal-Mart and start asking. Until then…
