Wouldn’t we all prefer to have a 10-20 minute long high-quality cinematic each tier instead of a long, boring quest chain we do once, skip forever, and generally suffer through?
Same with levels: Why even have levels? What purpose do they serve? Leveling mattered 25 years ago when it would take you 1-2 years to max out a character in an MMO, but these days it’s a 2 day long speedbump on the way to doing the content everyone actually enjoys: Raid, M+, and PvP.
Why not just remove quests and levels entirely, and let us focus on the parts of the game we actually enjoy
Slowly introducing talents and abilities while you learn to play your class, rather than dumping you at 80 with a full spellbook and saying “figure it out”.
The game has to cater to every playstyle. New players take longer to level and figure out the game. Alts of veteran players get xp boosts to get through it faster.
That mattered 20 years ago but it doesn’t matter today. There are almost zero new players, and those few I’ve seen all got introduced and trained up by someone.
We could have an introduction zone without requiring levels. Levels serve no purpose anymore.
It does matter, because leveling and growing player power are core tenants of an RPG. It might not fit with your narrow viewpoint but it’s a main purpose of the game.
It would be a massive design failure if you were required to have someone else teach you the game.
I agree. Levels serve no purpose. It’s just hazing new players before they see the real game.
I’ve introduced a small number of players over the years and not a single one made it through leveling.
The only ones who ever reached endgame were the ones who played previously of their own accord.
Slowly introducing abilities to a new player is a poor excuse. They are gonna be trash when they get there any way. They just largely play alone, get stomped in all content because they dont have heirlooms or understand gear, usually get trash talked by some nerd and stop logging in.
Leveling is a massive roadblock to any one trying the game. I, for one, find it excruciating. It would be better if we had reasons to explore the world other than going through the leveling tunnel.
My vote is to take out levels and make only gear matter.
It’s crazy how much content they make that just sucks, new crap zone with crap quests
Just make another dungeon bro so we don’t have repeats.
And yes, a longer cinematic would be way better than the questline. Ideally the quests are actually somewhat fun and easy to follow but they’ve shown that’s never going to happen
I like feeling involved in the world. I want to play my part in the story. I love cinematics, but watching a 20 minute cinematic and letting that be the entire story experience would be incredibly lame.
And some people actually do enjoy leveling. What we don’t like is how blizzard destroyed it and made it nothing more than a chore to actually play the game.
That’s not because leveling though. It’s because Blizzard destroyed the leveling the experience by forcing players through old crappily scaled content.
