Apologies for what I’m assuming is a frequent question, but that I couldn’t find specifically in the search of this forum -
I’d like to pick up a melee spec, and I’m wondering if Survival qualifies. What I mean here is this:
- Can I level as Survival, and it’s mostly melee. Pulling at ranged is fine, but I’m not seeing a bow listed as “primary weapon type” so I’m guessing this is true
- I can melee my way up starting at level 1.
- Starting abilities include melee options that aren’t total crap (a la classic hunters).
Again, sorry, but it’s murky at best as to how Survival plays, and between now and Legion is seems it has changed. I personally haven’t played a hunter since Vanilla, and I’m trying to suss out things from posts.
Survival hunter my main spec on retail.
- Yes. I leveled as survival twice on retail. Works find. Survival use polearms “2hands weps”
- At level 10 you are allowed to switch specs. Until then you play a BM.
- Yes. They work well. Raptor strike “funny i know” and kill command be you main attack until you talent mongoose. You do get a few range attacks as you level but they are your dot and/or have a cd.
BfA survival is 100 times better then Legion survival. it flow very well at 120, at 110 really. Icy-vein will help with talents.

Uh you can level as melee on classic much in the same way you can level using only a wand as a mage. It’s a terrible idea and you’re gimping yourself.
The rest is true though. Emphasis on the part that Hunters are BM by default until level 10 in modern WoW so they cannot be melee until then. You can just use the ranged abilities in melee range though.
In Classic you can level as Survival, reading more into it after that would be rather foolish really, unless you want to purposely misconstrue what I was saying.
But he said “Can I level as Survival, and it’s mostly melee.”
Again, technically yes to both parts of the question. But neither are recommended, especially the second part.
Doesn’t matter anyway because I’m pretty sure he is not talking about Classic.
A case could be made that SV in Classic was mostly Melee, especially when you look at the SV page of the Spellbook and the talent tree. Melee sucks in Classic, but even now I am reaching as mush as you were when you thought that you should say something to me about a subject you dislike.
Then why even bother with talking to me about Classic Melee Hunters then?
By this logic BM is neither because it has neither ranged nor melee abilities in its section of the spellbook. That’s just how spell classification worked back then.
You did say “both retail and classic” in your 1st post.
I did say that I was reaching as much as you were didn’t I?
And one would have to be reaching when they thought that I was saying Classic SV was melee. So, are you bored or what?
…but…OP specifically… mentioned melee… in that point…
This is unbelievably pointless now.
IDK, it’s kinda humorous while I have some down time waiting on Classic to update.
