I wondered what the difference was. Everyone said it takes sooo long to level in classic.
Well, Im trying it out over curiosity. And its taking a bit longer yeah.
But whats making it take longer is about 90% just because of more travel time. Im having to run on foot everywhere.
That and I seem to get less exp from quests, although that seems to be balanced out by killing world trash, which if its two levels higher than my character has been paying out pretty good each kill. I think that probably balances out at the end of the day pretty well, since running quests typically involved killing stuff anyway.
Point being, it seems to me that the longer travel time because Im running is MOST of the time increase in leveling overall with classic versus retail.

Travel time and mob difficulty are two pretty big factors that dictate the leveling speed in classic.
People claim that it’s more or less for “exploring the world” but I find myself alt-tabbed out to do other things more often while my character runs to that to where I want to go.

It takes almost twice as long to hit 60 in classic as it does 120.

I have taken to listening to audio books while playing classic due to the travel times.
It’s actually very relaxing, even though the book I’ve been listening to has had some inaccuracies within it.
It’s a proper RPG leveling experience in Classic. Retail leveling feels like running the same mile over and over.
With Classic, you feel the power progression. Some mobs are more difficult to kill than others. Running everywhere makes you feel more involved in the world.
It’s longer definitely, but it feels rewarding at the end of it.

Well that and the solo targeting of mobs/quest items, ridiculously low drop rate on some quest items, and really low spawn rate on some mobs.

Sure but not because of some fantastic world reason. You travel slower and you take longer waiting on stuff.

yeah…thats kinda the point, I guess. Its not taking longer because of some grand difference between game versions. Its just taking me longer to get places…which is most of my added time. Then a bit more for having to heal more often between fights.
meh.

Latter isn’t exactly true— Dynamic respawns have been crazy. Things respawning on top of you that you just killed not even 30 secs ago. It’s like Retail in that sense.
It’s also dependant on how crowded the area is, it seems-- NE start area was so crowded you couldn’t even get things done. Tauren start area seemed more on par with what I remember from TBC.

I was fighting battleboars on my druid. I needed to collect 12 flanks and snouts. I had to kill about 30 of them for those. In addition there were like 5 other people killing the same ones that only spawned 5-6 in the area. The quest took about 30 minutes to complete. That is not some super RPG experience there. That is just dated gameplay.

same thing yesterday. I had to collect something. There were at least a dozen other players out there doing the same quest. I finally just got tired and walked away. Thankfully Im playing human and it was around stormwind here, so going back wont be too hard to do it when the newness has died down a bit.

It takes a while but it’s not all about racing to max level like retail. There is so much meaningful stuff you can do at lower levels that’s really fun.
Retail is about max level, classic is about everything the game offers.

Not really I spent 3 hours “playing” last night mostly waiting on mobs. Some mobes seemed to spawn too fast (like stromgaurd keep) others just were going way too slow.

Uh… that’s the very definition of an RPG. The fact that other elements are affecting your gameplay, organically, is what makes it an RPG.
“Ah… too many people around trying to kill the same mobs I am… I’m going to have to compete” is an RPG.
Nowadays?
“Ah…too many people around trying to kill the same mobs I am. Not to worry, the algorithm will dynamically spawn more mobs just for widdle ole me because it detects more people around” yea… immersive , isn’t it?

Being an inconvenient pain the butt is an RPG?

No that has nothing NOTHING to do with the definition of a RPG. RPGs can be single player. This is just dated gameplay.
I mean you want to talk about “immersive” as if fighting over mob spawns is some how “immersive”?

If I remember right it was slower and got REALLY slow around 50-53 and up. Basically there was simply not enough quests at that point so a person had to grind it out killing mobs and or dungeons. Blizzard added some things in Silithus to help out but man.

Versus having everything handed to you… yes.

Exactly. Wasting time isn’t hard mode. It’s tedious mode.

Indeed, if it makes sense in the world. Which, in Classic, it does.
Now, take Retail. A quest is timegated. Pain in the butt? Yes. Does it make sense? No.
I can already fly in other worlds, but why not in a new expac? I have to wait for exalted rep. Anddd I have to wait for Blizzard (an omnipotent being that controls our world) to open up that ability. Pain in the butt? Yes. Makes sense? No.
