Leveling Paths for Horde

I’m planning on returning to play Classic. I want to try something different and play Horde but I only leveled as Alliance at the end of BC/beginning of Wrath.

I’m going to play as an Orc Warlock on a PvP realm. My issue is that, on launch day, it feels like it would be impossible to level as Horde because Tauren, Orc, and Troll all filter into the Barrens and the rest of Kalimdor. Also, assuming people use guides, some of the most popular guides say to go Barrens.

Going to Tirisfal and into Hillsbrad also feels like it wouldn’t pan out because I would be forced to travel back and forth between continents too often.

I was wondering if there were some alternate leveling paths to avoid most of the zerg from at least 1-35/40. Is Durotar—>Tirisfal—>Hillsbrad worthwhile for an Orc? Is outright grinding mobs in some obscure place the best way to get ahead? Should I learn skinning and herbalism?

You’re completely forgetting about Silverpine Forest.

I doubt there will be much of a zerg with layering tech taking over the game. At least that’s what layering is designed to prevent. If your only concern is getting ahead of people you will probably just have to play more than them.

Warlocks can train in Undercity so there is no need to switch continents. Level up to 5 or so then jump on the zep to UC and start questing. Brill > silverpine > Hillsbrand

If you want an ideal path where you’re minimizing ‘green’ and ‘red’ quests, you’re going to have to do a lot of traveling (which is actually fine because you’re not going to gimp yourself on quests as if you had stuck to a single zone).

There’s a lot of level gaps in The Barrens and Silverpine such that you can bounce back and forth between the zones. Stonetalon Mountains is often overlooked. Ashenvale is typically a higher-end zone (by the time you’re done with the barrens).

Look up Joana and his guides. Wrote extensive leveling guides for Horde in vanilla. He got into the beta and is updating his guides for classic.

I can’t post links yet so just google Joana’s guides

Is it the best route for Undead to go through Silverpine etc.?

In reality though you’ll be going back and forth between zones while leveling because of quest levels. Red quests will kill you.

As alliance I set my hearth to wetlands to make it easy to go back and forth between continents. I did green/yellow in one zone and then went to the next zone (same level) and did them. By then I had leveled up and those red quests in zone 1 were yellow.

Yea but you’ll probably need to go to the Barrens too.

It depends on if all you care about is speed.

But you also have to keep in mind, you WILL visit every location several times. This is intended.

Late TBC changed this to streamline the experience so you could get to cap faster in preparation for wrath.

There’s also a good chance that several quest hubs people take for granted in the late game won’t exist at launch as they were added almost a year after launch, which means trying to rush through the initial levels will bite you HARD, and you’ll have to make up the difference of those missing levels entirely via grinding.
