Hello all,
Am very excited about the launch of Classic WoW and have already picked what I am going to play (Tauren Shaman / Alchemist).
What I am kind of iffy about is the best order in which to level this character as, back in 2004 - 2006, I never did manage to level a character all the way to 60. It wasn’t until Burning Crusade / Wrath of the Lich King that I finally achieved a max level character (most likely because I finally found a guild that would accept my work hours).
Below is the order of things that I am imagining for the first 30-40 levels, with a goal of completing all quests in all zones while I am still (sort-of) in that level range.
- Create Bag Alt Character (Undead Mage)
- Complete DeathKnell (1-5) quests
- Learn Enchanting / Go live in Undercity
-
- Create Primary Character (Tauren Shaman)
- Complete Camp Narache (1-5) quests
- Learn Herbalism (store everything)
- Learn Skinning (store everything)
- Complete DeathKnell (1-5) quests
- Complete Valley of Trials (1-5) quests
- Complete Sen’jin Village (5-8) quests
- Complete Tirisfal Glades (5-10) quests
- Complete Durotar (5-10) quests
- Complete Mulgore (5-10) quests
- Drop Skinning / Learn Leatherworking
- Process all stored Leather to sell
- Drop Leatherworking / Learn Alchemy
- Process all stored Herbs to level Alchemy
- Complete Silverpine Forest (lvl 10-20) quests
- Ragefire Chasm (15-21) dungeon?
- Complete The Barrens (lvl 10-25) quests
- Wailing Caverns (15-25) dungeon?
- Shadowfang Keep (16-26) dungeon?
- Complete Stonetalon Mountains (15-27) quests
- Complete Ashenvale (18-30) quests
- Blackfathom Deeps (20-30) dungeon?
- Complete Hillsbrad Foothills (20-30) quests
- Complete Thousand Needles (25-35) quests
Past this point, however, I am very uncertain as to what order to quest in which zones (with the goal of hitting all of them). Suggestions?
If you’re at 35 at the end of Thousand Needles, you can go to Dustwallow Marsh. If not, go poke around in Desolace. After that you can spend your 40s in Feralas and Tanaris. In your 50s you can do Un’goro and Winterspring. If you still have some room left after Winterspring, head to Silithus for what little there is there. It’s a fairly dense zone so there’s some good grinding to be had.
If you want to grind mid 30’s 35+ as a horde go to swamp of sorrow’s, no alliance quest there but like 4. and tons of good selling grays / Skin / Herbs etc!
Classic is a different beast. You often can’t complete an entire zone before you have to leave and start another. An example of this is The Barrens. The quests for Northern Barrens are appropriate for your 13 to 18 or 20 range or something like that, but there is a small gap between north and south that has to be filled with some Stone Talon Mountains quests.
This is true of a LOT of zones.
So these “Complete this zone” then “Complete that zone” may not work well.
To combat this problem on a recent project while trying to reach exalted with Orgimmar, I created a spreadsheet with every quest in the game and organized each quest by zone on a different sheet. It took me a long time to do this.
As I leveled and did quests, I marked them off of my spread sheet. I can tell you that by the time I hit 60, I had only 3 quests left that gave Orgrimmar rep.
Granularity is key for vanilla quests, because they took you all over the place.
iirc there was an addon that showed you all available quests within the zones if you were going for 100% completion
@Cheater: Might you still have this spreadsheet?
@Praystation: Might you recall what the name of that addon was?
I was a completionist too. Vanilla questing was very nonlinear, taking you every which way. Assuming you’re not in a hurry to reach max level, just do everything you can in a zone, then head to another. Go back to old zones occasionally to see if anything new has popped up. Enjoy getting lost. It’s an adventure, not a race.
The main drawback is that you get less reputation from completing low-level quests. If there’s a particular city you want to get exalted, you’ll need to do their quests before they turn gray.
Don’t forget to turn on low-level quests on the minimap.
@Elissaphet : Early on I’ve already put a focus on the Forsaken faction to bring them into parity with the rest, after that it’s just trying to keep it all in relative balance.
Might anyone know of a downloadable spreadsheet, database, etc. that I can use to create my own quest checklist? I was taking a look at classicdb.ch but I didn’t see an option to export out of it.

I plan on leveling slowly, and i believe we will have a smaller quest log in Vanilla as well. I plan on starting unarmed mixed with differnent weapons, whites or greys irrelevent since im just trying to get the Skills. I plan on doing Herbalism Skinning plus fishin cookin and first aid. So really i am going for a slow all around approach, no boredom here because im not in a rush to hit max level.
