Guys, I am new to retail, but my account is not new. I started to build a new char and now somehow I am in Legion expansion with my lvl 23. I got an invitation and went to Stormwind harbor to start Legion.
I thought, I must first somehow talk to Chromie to change to a different expansion, but it worked without. How is that so? Can I now level completely in Legion? That’s actually awesome, but why is that so?

Are you sure it’s Legion (Broken Isles), and not Battle for Azeroth (Kul’Tiras for Alliance)?
Yes, Broken Isles. Now I am still in Dalaran, the town has teleported there.
Did you go to the Command Board?
Up to 45. Or 49 if you do the legion invasions but you’re probably better off just moving instead of waiting for the invasions to happen

Isn’t it 59 so you can go right into DF after? Or does it only go up to 58-60ish with Chromie Time?

Not without Chromie time. Broken Isles Maxes out at 45 if you don’t talk to Chromie, and I believe the bonus xp from invasion wq stops at 49, but I could be wrong. It’s been a while.
You can also make a DH, and after the intro it send you into legion too. You’re level 50 tho, so you should have access to Chromie (unless they changed it with df)

Worst comes to worst you can also make a trial character at max lvl or close to it, do the steps to first enable Chromie Time (I think you might just have to talk to her in your capitol or something) and enable Chromie time for all your toons that way and just delete the trial character when it expires. I believe that loophole should still work as it used to
I dont have a lvl 50 char in retail only in classic. It was not a DH but a human lock.
Oops didn’t notice that was a classic character lol.
I haven’t even heard of that, so idk lol.
I think, I will stay in Legion, since it’s the expansion I actually want to level through

After 45 levelling will drop off in the current state, but it won’t take too long from there to 60.
Alternatively if you just love legion there’s Archeology which is actually very nice in legion. If you shoot for getting a ton of relics done, might get the rest of your levelling process done.

Thank you for the hints. One more question. What about the artifact weapons? Are they only useful in Legion or can I use them also later?
Yea only useful in Legion and even then barely.
You can go to any continent without chromie time, only it will be scaled to the level that’s appropriate for that content. For example legion is 35-45 (made up number I dunno what it really is), going at level 20, it will still be scaled for 35 and therefore impossible or very difficult or you’re 50 and it scales to 45 and makes it much easier and rewards less xp. Chromie time would scale it down to 20.
And artifact are mostly useless if you have heirloom. Having them is cool for transmog though.
If you aren’t in Chromie Time then it’s up to a point. I would go back to your capital and talk to Chromie to activate the scaling.
You can level up to level 60 before needing to move to DF.
