Leveling a warrior pve only and prof questions

I would like to level a warrior, which will ultimately be our guild tank. However i have read that warriors are miserable to level. Here are my questions

  1. Do most people level warrior as dps or tank. I suspect tank would take forever to kill stuff.
  2. Is engineering a good choice for a warrior tank. I noticed the engineering goggles are cloth. I didnt see plate goggles. I already have an alchemist so i dont need that.

I guess thats all for now

Engineering is a good pvp profession because of the gadgets and grenades but it’s pretty expensive to level.

Most people level as a dps and just toss on a shield to tank dungeons. You can tank as arms or fury just fine, but do your healers a favor and put on the shield.

Does that mean that engineering is not good for pve. I wont ever do pvp?

warriors learn the vast majority of their functions though their trainer.

Shield block, revenge, and so on. This lets you level as any spec, and slap on a shield to tank.

I’d suggest learning how to tank with your guild/friends before going out into PUG land, as people have been turned off of tanking by just tanking for anyone at first.

Engineering is BiS for pvp AND pve. A full raid of sapper charges can trivialize a lot of raid encounters. Not to mention you can use grenades for AoE damage/threat

I have tanked in retail, just not in classic

If it was every player would have been an engineer.

OP level as DPS and a 31/5/15 spec at 60 lets you tank everything. Blacksmithing has some good items especially when leveling but you have to do a lot of mining unless you spend some money at the AH. Alchemy is great for leveling, steady supply of healing and buff pots. Definitely try to level cooking as you go too buff food can help.

Engineering is not critical for raiding. Like someone said above, it can help on rare occasions. For the aoe threat part, it’s only one component of what you have to do to have REALLY good aoe threat as a warrior. That involves popping a booty load of consumables (immolation pots, holy water, etc.), shield spike, that engineering shield that destroys itself when you block, and Thunderfury.

Also. What about the goggles being cloth. Would i still want to use those or is that avoided for tanks

In try hard guilds, every player is an engineer.

Is it required? No.

Is it the best raiding profession? Yes. Yes it is.

OP also said for leveling. He won’t have the money for leveling engie while leveling unless he throttles his leveling back hard.

I would avoid those outside of leveling. The explosives and consumables are what make engi so good. You can also make ammo for lazy hunters and sell it to them.

I wouldn’t wear a cloth hat if you had a plate one handy

Ok. Thanks everyone for the great help. I think i will have a fun time.

I have 3 alts at this point, so im not worried about going very slow to pay to level engineering. I am also focused on my RP guild. This guy will be a gnome warrior so i wanted to make sure to take engineering for the RP of it

Nothing more terrifying than a 2’ cotton ball barreling towards you while foaming at the mouth

Leveling is sort of a pain. You just have to be careful who you’re fighting. Gear is so important, leveling will be easier when you have a green weapon. Cooking and Alchemy are both good professions to start out with, you will be making foods and potions that will give you the help you need.

If you wanna focus on pve then pick alchemy. You’ll need plenty of health pots to level as a war, and the trolls blood, + str, +agi pots are just a plus.

I don’t think it was mentioned yet, but make sure you keep your First Aid up to date. It definitely helps reduce your downtime.
Also if possible, fight lower level mobs. I’ve run into way too many situations where I’m using a high damage 2 hander, and then whiff 4 times in a row. Next thing I know I’m running for my life or making a trip back to my corpse.
