So thinking of tossing my hat in finally and rolling a hunter. Survival seems fun but is it fairly viable as a leveling spec?

Go for it!
Both BM and Survival do well while leveling up. It’s just a matter of which playstyle you prefer.
MM works as well ofc, I just haven’t heard from anyone who levelled up with this spec.

SV is more than viable. Get a scalehide or gorilla, though if you hit warmode a raptor, hyena, or rodent is the default pvp pet.
Elemental Force is a great and often cheap enchant for the polearm/staff heirloom. Haste is also just a little better than crit.
As a leveling spec, yes. As a spec you would want to play at 120, not quite. You will have a difficult time finding groups willing to take you.
Like Ramy said here, depending on what you want to do at max level. It might be tricky to find random groups who would accept you as Survival.
Best option to avoid this problem is to find a guild that is okay with you running as melee. There are many guilds out there that don’t mind. You just have to find one.
As for performance, any guild or group that is not playing @ a competitive level, if they don’t accept you purely because they think that your choice of spec will be what would mess everything up for them. Then, they are flat out wrong. And you’d be better off trying to get into another guild/group anyway.
Competition is ofc another thing. Here, the only thing that really matters is maximum performance(this includes player performance to!). And since perfect balance is impossible to achieve in this game, there will always be someone at the bottom(not saying that this is Survival). Just, not everyone can be at the top.

I also want to point out that survival is still doing very competitively in EP despite so few actually playing it.

I play everything except Survival. The spec is really, really fun, but I find mm or bm to be more helpful as a 100 hunter leveling in Legion right now. I also use a fox or a spirit animal. (the fox’s name is Tod, btw. Anyone who gets that reference I made… /cheer)
Do what you think is the best and most playable for you! I personally leveled with mm until I hit Legion, then I started playing bm. Now, I think I’ll switch back to mm again, seeing as it’s my original playstyle. I actually leveled for a bit as survival, but enjoyed mm more.
