Leveling 2h axe to 300 has been a taxing experience

It’s taken so much longer to level this skill than all the others that I’ve maxed out.

I’ve heard stacking intellect helps level weapon skills faster.

as a hunter a far bit of my gear contains INT

That’s actually a good idea.

Mage buff, elixir, Druid buff, get the int where you can. It was meant to be this way.

get that mend pet gear.

Another tip I have would be trying to spam attacks that use weapons, such as Rank 1 Wing Clip for you as a Hunter (I use Hamstring as a Warrior) . Intellect helps too. Also, the level of the mob you’re attacking also seems to have an impact. If you’re attacking a level 30, your chance of getting that last Weapon Skill point is slim to none, versus hitting a 60 or higher.

That latter bit is something I have noticed leveling a few skills as the warrior.

Another thing you can do is find the quickest speed axe also. There are a lot of 2.4-2.5s 2h axes out there.

Also, as Triomega stated, make sure to fight mobs that are at least 10 levels or so higher than your current weapon skill. So if you’re weapon skill is 100 (level 20), then make sure you’re fighting mobs that are at least level 30 if you want to get skillups faster. If you can tank even higher level mobs, then do that instead. As a hunter, that can be extremely easy to do with a pet. Just sic your pet on a mob for 10-20% of it’s health (make sure growl is on) and then put them on passive, while you attack away at the mob. Heal your pet as needed.

The mobs in the blasted lands are great for this. Mobs like the servant of allistarj and some other servants do this thing where they can’t be killed unless you break their binding. You can sit on them for hours if you want to. They eventually start attacking again, but at least you don’t have to worry about chasing down mobs constantly.
