The problem most people arne’t getting is that there is more to levellign than just the xp needed per level and the rewards you get.
It’s part of a larger system.
You get XP from the content you engage in. If the content is lacking or is something not engaging to be a part of, the levelling process is going to suffer.
You engage in content via the class you play, and if the class you play isn’t fun or engaging, its going to color the entire process.

The numbers themselves mean little.
They could make it 3 levels but if it takes 9 million years(and the only way to skip through them is with a boost), it beats the whole purpose.
Fun factor aside, that’s completely subjective.
Consider that at the SAME time the survey discussed the level squish they also asked if players would buy level boosts more or less often. That doesn’t exactly help their cause of this being for the good of the game. They are looking at profit as part of the reason.
However, the core reason, assuming its not part of a larger system?
Psychology.
It can look intimidating to new players that there are One hundred AND twenty levels to go through to get to the end of the game. Sixty levels to go through is far more palatable, even if the time it takes is about the same.
Now, like I said, if this is part of a bigger system, perhaps they should COMMUNICATE on their overall plans even if they can’t give hard specifics. So that we know that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Good points.
It’s so hard to look at this game from the perspective of a new player since I have played it for so long.
I keep wanting to make a relative of mine who has never played this game play the game and just watch her, see if she struggles, gets confused or intimidated.
We all take so much for granted hard to imagine it from any other perspective.
a level squish would make it easier for them to make it more engaging. most classes right now get all of their abilities by level 60 or close to anyway with a different talent system they could set max level to 60, 70, 80 or I even think 90 could work if done properly. Making the leveling experience more enjoyable as well as making it feel rewarding. Also they could eliminate a level cap and stop
adding zones and just use what they have already but new content continues to give you xp but it will slow down so much making xp gains so little that you don’t notice. This would give them the ability to add more abilities or change classes slightly by making new content stuff give you more xp
I hope that last part made sense
