Alphons I don't know much about macros, but let's say I use a cast sequence macro to put up Agony/Corruption/Immolation.
What is the difference between pressing that three times versus pressing three separate buttons? Nothing other than the amount of buttons I'm pressing.
There's no support for cast sequence macros in 1.12 unless you download supermacro.
I've got no problem with people using those macros tbh, it just limits them in pvp.
I could be in the minority here, but I never used a macro once in the entire time I played this game. Hell, I used addons like everyone else but I never had button macros of any kind.

Lol I told ya I didn't know much about macros and to be clear I agree with you. The point I was trying to make was that macros are not playing the game for you; the player still has to physically press a button repeatedly for it to work.
Hopefully other people will read it and clear up some confusion.

Interesting, post up that macro I'd like to see how its written; I have a good idea how they may have done that.
The Backstab / SS macro is really barbarically simple. It will always try to cast backstab, but if it cant it will then cast Sinster strike. That way if the target turns when you least expect it, you use SS instead.
/script class=UnitClass("target"); if ((class=="Rogue") or (class=="Warrior")) then CastSpellByName("Scorpid Sting"); else CastSpellByName("Viper Sting"); end
/run if UnitPowerType("target")>0 then CastSpellByName("Scorpid Sting"); else CastSpellByName("Viper Sting"); end
That is a better version, works with druids.
/script c=CastSpellByName;if(UnitBuff("player",1)==nill) then c("Aspect of the Cheetah") else if(strfind(UnitBuff("player",1),"Ability_Mount_JungleTiger")) then c("Aspect of the Monkey"); else c("Aspect of the Cheetah"); end; end;
Cheetah/monkey or hawk swap without addon
/run if CheckInteractDistance("target", 3) and (not PlayerFrame.inCombat) then AttackTarget() elseif not IsAutoRepeatAction(1) then CastSpellByName("Auto Shot") end
autoshot/melee
You should also be able to change the range on it and do Wingclip/Conc shot.
Every time someone went ding, which happend a lot more in vanillia, I would do congratulations surrounded by raid icon stars on 3 lines, and I used that so often I set it to a button on my action bar.
I can't wait for ding to mean something again, nobody says it anymore!

Oh, ok I see how that works. Yeah that's really treading the line. That's quite different than what I consider a macro. That's almost a bot like a totem stomping button. Yeah, still gotta push it, but it's cheese.
Imo, a targeting macro is handy, but limits should be implemented to prevent things from going down the full automation path.
It's could be easily separated to where you can still push the totem select button but then you're required to actually hit a different button to attack.
OR
If you have a button that can target and attack a certain unit it can only do that one thing.
Macros should be limited to a bespoke function, and never capable of more than such.
Example if you have a totem stomping macro, it should rewire 2 key strokes to function. One to select the desired target and another to implement the attack mechanism.
I've got no problem with people using those macros tbh, it just limits them in pvp.
Ofc. I too havent got an issue with using most macros from vanilla days unless they are used in PVP. They should be limited in use there.

Anyone know how they limited that totem stomping macro in current wow? I think i've read you cant even target a totem via macros. That would be the bestest solution.
*i like the word bestest* :)

Yes, they made it impossible to use a macro to select a totem.
The same mechanism could be used to prevent macros from selection of any specific target type.
Something of note, my very first macro was designed to target a certain player by his character name. He was that vexing that I was forced to deal with him first in any battle.
Yes. Same button. You can watch tv and play with an arm tied behind your back. Pressing one button isnt making decisions u know. There is nothing to decide. Its mindles button mashing 11111....
Thats what macros do. Automate gameplay.
Other arguments are kinda moot so im not going into them.
I can make a castsequence macro and spam one button while watching TV.
Or I can individually place each ability in that same cast sequence on my action bars wherever I think they look/work best, simply memorize my keybinds, and go through my castsequence whle watchign TV anyway.
It's literally the exact same outcome. I do it all the time. If I want to drop consecrate, SoR, judge, SoR, crusader strike again, I can put them all into one castsequence macro I have to press 5 times, or I can press t for consecrate, 1 for SoR, 3 for judge, 1 for SoR, and 2 for crusader strike. Gameplay wise it's actually no different, exact same rotation without looking at the keyboard or screen.
I use the same keybinds and ability layout across most PC games I play. It's every bit as effortless as simply macroing them all to one keybind I spam to save actionbar space. Functionally it's actually exactly the same.
I can hotkey X trinket and Y ability that don't share GCD and mash both at the same time, or I can put them together on a macro on one keybind. Functionally exactly the same.
In classic it was possible to write macro to help in PvP situations:
/script local spell = UnitCastingInfo("target"); if (spell == "Polymorph" or spell == "Holy Light") then CastSpellByName("Kick"); end
There were also certain console variables that were able to help with targeting (e.g. select only close targets):
/console targetNearestDistance 10
/script TargetEnemy();
/script CastSpellByName("Hamstring");
/console targetNearestDistance 40
It was also possible to automate movement and casting:
/script local posX, posY = GetPlayerMapPosition("player"); if (posX < 10 and posY < 10) then MoveForwardStart(); else MoveForwardStop(); end; TargetEnemy(); AttackTarget();
Some of the addons like "AVR" can also work on classic API.
This all was part of "classic" experience for some people. But with today knowledge more people can use this type of macro or addons.

Paudric What was the most absurd macro you had in vanilla. We are talking longest macro or the ones that were mandatory for pro gameplay. Even throw in those silly macros
/golf clap
/taunt.
I can't type it out but it swapped to my ancient qiraji ripper, cast sinister strike, then swapped back to my perdition's blade.
Just something to count my hunter ammo, I think it was /use arrow even though you couldn't use arrows but if you did that it showed the count in the icon and you could drag it to your action bar and see how much ammo you had. #showtooltip didn't work in vanilla.
I actually have more crazy macros today in warlords/legion/bfa to be honest. Most of my classes have a single mount macro like this.
#showtooltip
/cast [combat] Ghost Wolf
/cast [nocombat,indoors] Ghost Wolf
/cast [nocombat,outdoors,swimming] Darkwater Skate
/cast [nocombat,outdoors,noswimming,noflying] Rivendare's Charger
/cast [nocombat,outdoors,noswimming,flying] Icebound Frostbrood Vanquisher

You can also just drag your arrows to an open place on one of your bars and have a number of arrows always showing.
Works with food, regs, ore, pots, bandies, and i think all consumables too.
