Let's take a moment to appreciate WoW server infrastructure

Seeing the whole mess that FFXIV launch is, with people sitting in very long queues (10k + people) and getting disconnected mid-queue to just being pushed back to the end of the queue again, with squenix scrumbling to give free days to compensate and the whole blunder the they are going through… it actually reminds one of how good we have it in WoW. In spite of all current content lacking, systems, game design etc, the servers are solid and the lessons learned have been applied with shards, load balancing, etc.

It’s easy to log on to servers that are mostly empty.

Not sure if serious.

Classis launch… failure. Issues for days week 1 some servers.

SL released…failed again. close to 50% of servers not working.;

TBCC…massive failure. NO! servers up till well after 12 hours later than they were supposed to be.

I remember SL launch being totally smooth. I don’t care about classic.

Launches have become much smoother. There was a huge difference between the cata and the WoD releases. Although I remember WoD not being perfect at release it was amazing to have no lag and get into servers so quickly. It’s only gotten better too. I don’t think it’s because there was less people either because during the pandemic there was a lot of people excited to play.

We have weekly failures to launch servers.

Let’s pretend WoW didn’t have their fair share of login queues during their launches. Wrath and WoD as two examples:

FF is just going through theirs now. The main difference between them and Blizz is that Blizz didn’t have to fight thru a semiconductor shortage for server upgrades. Even with that in mind, I remember when I couldn’t log into WoD for two days when it launched.

Blizz learned from it. Let others do the same…and this:

I only ever experienced a log in queue during TBC, but then I don’t play on full or high population servers to avoid log in queues.

Semiconductor shortage is a cop out. They have the money they just chose not to. The thought process is why throw money that wont be a problem in the next quarter. If your honestly buying that narrative you’re short sighted.

I remember falling asleep while waiting in queue and then waking up to see myself still in the queue

Generally speaking WoW servers are pretty good.
It doesn’t matter who you are or how much money you have though, you can absolutely break servers when you launch an expansion to a game.

Simply put, It’s not worth the money it would take to invest in super beefy servers, unless that’s going to be your average player load at all times, 24/7

This.

Why spend a truck load of money upgrading and mantaining super powerful servers if you’re only gonna need servers that BEEFY once every year or so?

At first I thought you were being sarcastic. Then I realized you were serious and I don’t think I have laughed that hard in a long time.

I build PCs on a regular basis, professionally and as a hobby, so I keep up with supply and demand from both TSMC and the companies they do business with. It took me 10 months just to get my 3080ti and 5900x since their release, so it’s not that hard to believe when it comes to servers.

(Looks at wod launch)

Ummmmmm

Sl had queues on major servers iirc at launch.

I would agree, except SE architecture and network topology in the MMO sphere predates Blizz by at least 2 years via FFXI, and their playonline hasnt really changed significantly, so is it just taking SE longer to “learn”?

Im not 100% certain, but i think the queues are generated by attempting to login to the authentication server(s), not the realm you play on.

Because Blizz already went through what you guys say FFXIV is going through  Given some years FFXIV servers will be fine too hopefully.

Not necessarily, we just have to consider that the extra explosion in popularity isn’t just from a genuine interest in the game but also the exodus that is happening in WoW, which was unexpected.
