Rather have goofy / comical characters than an internal monologing Hot Topic Gillette cosplaying mall rat on the battlefield. At least comical characters are drawing fire away from the main character(s) and get in some awesome attacks. Like a mini nuke rocket to the space god’s eye.
The thing is, this is actually quite avoidable if the characters associated with the race aren’t written like jokes. FFXIV takes great pains to make sure each race gets enough time in the spotlight to not just be written off as comic relief (Azeroth’s villains wish they could be as manipulative as Teledji and Lolorito). WoW’s addiction to pop-culture jokes and tropes leads them into narrative rakes that they keep walking into.
I have both A Horde DK that I made around the SL prepatch and an Alliance warlock that I made in DF after that race was unlocked for almost everyone.
At this point, I’d say that pandaren are in my most played races along with gnomes and draenei. Honestly, when warlocks were unlocked and draenei got eredar customization, I was torn between making a pandaren or eredar warlock before I settled on the former because pandaren combat animations are just that good.
