Let us choose our spec on character creation?

Hey nothing lore related for once

Just something I wanted to suggest: Can we just pick what spec we wanna play on character creation?

I made a Hunter with the intention of playing Survival, but I can’t until level 10, I understand you want to ease new players into classes, but couldn’t it be an option, or something?

Almost all specs use completely different gear and approaches, and hey, what if you have heirlooms (how you feel about them belongs in another thread) for a spec and you just can’t use them for 10 levels?

It just seems like a silly restriction, feel like it would be better with giving players a choice between their specs before making their character, and give a description of each before making a description

I’m not even sure why specs are level locked, to be honest

Minor complaint, I know, but it’s bugged me for a while and figured, why not say something

Originally, we just got talent points every few levels and those only started after you were a few levels in. When they went to having full specs, they changed that to a level limit and for the most part it worked. Before specs are unlocked you got common abilities that every spec could benefit from and the abilities that substantially changed how the class played usually weren’t introduced until a much higher level. You were also supposed to get some idea of how the class plays before you made a semi-permanent choice of which spec to play. So, there really wasn’t a problem before.

I’m not sure if any other spec really has that issue. Maybe druids with feral/balance, but before lvl 10, you’re usually happy to have any ability to use, regardless of which spec it comes from.

TBH, it always felt a little weird if you thought of your character as a particular spec and you were forced to use abilities from the other specs, but that’s not really a gameplay issue.

That was true in Vanilla: Abilities were learned and didn’t matter what your spec was, you could use them…Mostly, some limitations

Now, each spec has mostly unique abilities with few exceptions, with the Hunter example earlier: Your only offensive ability until 10 is Cobra Strike, which is exclusive to BM

I think it’s different from the pre-10 talent issue, 'cause you can still use whatever abilities you wanted, it’s a lot different now

I don’t switch specs often, I usually have an identity in mind for a character and stick with it, it’s just unless the first 10 levels are that spec, they just kinda feel like a drag

…Like spamming 1 for Cobra Shot for an hour or two

Up to level 10, specs don’t really matter, honestly. You could sneeze on a few mobs and end up at level 10.

How about we remove the specs from level 1-10 and then chose our specs once we got to level 10, like how it was before.

what if we remove level 10

What if we remove specs

its really not that deep takes less than an hour to hit 10. i guess play the other spec or dont use the heirlooms

I agree with the OP. The changes that happen when they make you choose a spec are jarring. You figured out how to kind of play through the starter quests, and suddenly they take away all your spells and good luck trying to figure out how to play again. You’re on your own.

Or maybe make the class trainers useful again and have them slowly ease you into said spec you pick up until 10 by giving one ability at a time and a mini quest to say use heroic strike three times etc. That way level ten isn’t here have a bunch of spells/abilities good luck. But they are redoing the tutorial into zone come the level squish so maybe wait and see. They may change it but we have no new news just yet.

The class trainers need to do something. I get most of my game training from friends.

I feel they do as well. I think it brings back some rogue elements to leveling if you feel your learning something new as opposed to just getting better gear to make you stronger. Not saying we need rank spells like classic has even though I liked it but your right those lazy trainers do nothing besides stand there and if the class quests exist maybe give a few of those.

is it really that “jarring” as you put it?

you can level to 10 with like 3 buttons, then you pick a spec and have maybe 4. its not like there is any real nuance to specs at level 8

Well we have the training grounds that…I think only cheevo hunters use now

Having trainers maybe show tricks and tips for specs instead of having folks head to IcyVeins for the low down on how a class should be played would be neat

Y’know, training you in the way of a class

Is a shame they’ve just been resorted to just…sitting around

I see no harm in allowing for this suggestion.

With that said, is it really all that needed? You get up so fast, on Allied races you’re already at 20 and can change at whim.

For some classes like say Feral druid, your suggestion would mean the skill adjustment for level (perhaps getting bite earlier).

Yes, for me it’s that jarring to have all my abilities taken away and replaced with some other unexplained ones.

When I was going through this, people would tell me to go to icy-veins, where at the time zero help was available for people trying to level a spec. The site was intended to help elite min maxers tweak their spec or switch to a different one.

“Rotations” took the form of “If this proc is up do that”, neither of which I had. Gear recommended was mythic raid gear.

So yeah. When I wanted to switch from a level 10 windwalker monk to a brewmaster, I didn’t know where to start. That character is still level 42.

Yeah, like I said, minor suggestion, more an annoyance than anything

But there’s drastic changes between the classes that I don’t think the first 10 levels cover, and it’s pretty jarring, again, depending on the class

Fair enough ~ May they assess your suggestion and decide on the right course of action.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this were part of the overhauled leveling system coming in shadowlands.

The level 10 thing was mostly a holdover from a time when all of the specs were really not that different from eachother, and you got a talent point at every level past 10 to spend on tiny little traits that made it get different over time.

BM is probably the least understood spec in the game, few people actually play it, im not surprised leveling guides are hard to find

you dont need every nuance to level though the idea is to learn as you go. you can wear heirlooms with the wrong stats too, it hardly matters until 100+ and is worth it for the experience
