If I have an 8 key from the vault for a dungeon I’m not familiar with because I’m a casual player, why can’t I run it at 5 for practice? It would help other players, improve their IO, and let me prepare for a solid 8 run.

What’s stopping you? Find a 5 listed and run it.
Are you not able to downgrade your key?

I have only ran one of my own keys. Nothing has you tethered to your key.
Running your own key makes it easier to find a group. So, creating a tiered system, similar to a delve-like tier list, and allowing a free run at a lower level would let me warm up and practice in an easier “tier” than the one my key is at.
So where’d this 8 come from if you don’t know how to do 8s

Talk to the panda chick by the portal to The Timeways and drop your key level. Problem solved
If you want to actually learn dungeons you need to find someone to teach you. The level is not what’s holding you back, it’s the inexperience.

Yea multiple options to do it. Someone else’s or just push it up after knocking it down.
Yeah you can find a low key listed for that dungeon and sign up to it. Alternatively you can lower your key level if you really need to run yours for some reason.
You can lower it to 5 and then time it +2 or 3 and get another 8 key
