Let me play through old content IN ORDER

I’m so tired of this nonsense. I can accept each expansion being it’s own stand alone thing, sure, fine, great. Each of their stories is more or less self contained.

But can there be, I dunno, a toggle somewhere? Anywhere? to forcibly just LOCK AWAY quests and drops and content based on story progression? Even if I’m over level?

I know that the system still has this stuff, when I came back for war within and then did dragonflight all of the stuff from world quests to main story quests, to all of the little extra bits like the emerald dream stuff was locked away, the moment I got ONE character to 70, it was all of it, from top to bottom, unlocked for -every- character.

I thought if I moved to an alt and just, level locked myself to 69 I could make it through most of that content without problem and experience it properly THAT way but that is obviously not the case despite me using freaking TIME WALKING CAMPAIGNS for that purpose.

It is, endlessly, soul crushingly, freaking exhausting to go through this stuff. I want to experience the freaking story you guys wrote in the order it was intended to be consumed for goodness sake. I don’t want to be handed a pile of disjointed chapters and pages from a book and told “figure it out”

Look, I get it, I get it that folks don’t want to have to redo a bunch of old content, but I’ve never even experienced it once, and for the other folks who just skip quest text? They’re idiots, 100% of them, but fine, they’re paying their subs too, and they have the ability to keep doing that, I just want an option to play the game as it originally existed, and since I can’t even do that by -making an alt- to enjoy the journey for what it is, I’m here begging for you guys to MAKE IT AN OPTION FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

EDIT:
I’m already using the BTWQuests mod to help track stuff and that HELPS, but it still requires me to go and CHECK a freaking dinking LIST separate from the main game. I don’t want to have to manually do something the game should do -for me-

the option to choose would be cool…but if they ever MAKE me go thru every expansion again Im unsubbing the same day.
I have favorite zones I level thru all over the game. I dont want to go back to the old way personally, but totally see the appeal it might have for others

I know it’s not ideal, but you could do this with alts. Each character gets an expansion.

It would go: BC, Wotlk, Cata (this is going to be a tough one because it’s Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms), MoP, WoD, Legion, then SL.

That said, leveling is so fast I’m not sure you’d even see half of the expansion before you’re max level…and stuff has been cut, like the legendary cloak questline in MoP that had a lot of story.

For instance, I decided to finally level an Evoker I had sitting at level 61 and do WoD. I was level 66 by the end of the intro, and I only did 2 hubs in Shadowlands before I hit 70. That took me all of an hour…

Or, play Classic. Experience how it was when the expansion launched.

I’ve done this. Problem is, even with Chromie time, you do eventually out level that expansion zone, well before it’s time to head to the current zones. Unless they changed it recently, I haven’t leveled a new alt in a few months.

I agree, OP. A toggle to choose never hurt anyone.

Just lock your experience gains and level in the expansions as you see fit, changing timelines at Chromie to go along with it.

I already paid them once for this stuff, I’m not paying them a second time for the story content.

Yes, I’m aware that’s an option. It was even the plan.
My ticked offness is that having gotten ONE character to 70, it apparently threw a switch that made it so that instead of the METERED experience leading you through the story in dragonflight, you can now just play the entire thing in any possible order on EVERY character, regardless of time walking status.

Go play classic.

Oh sorry, I thought that’s what you wanted to do, play through the whole thing.

Yes. Without paying them a second time for the content I already -paid for- like I could when I bought it, like I can on almost any other MMO.

Look, this isn’t complicated.

See this map?

This is not what I saw on my highest level character before I got to lvl.70.

I want the game to have a toggle, where I can just say “Hey, can you not spoil content for me by making quests available to me out of story order!”

That’s it!

THIS GAME STATE ALREADY EXISTS BECAUSE I LITERALLY WAS PLAYING IT BEFORE MY MAIN HIT 70.

Also, Dragonflight, if you have not noticed, is not released on classic yet.

I’m confused. Is this about DF/TWW or old content? Because from Legion onwards Blizzard have intentionally designed zones to have self-contained stories. What goes on in the Waking Shore is not relevant to what happens in the Azure Span, etc. It only comes together at max level (or what what max level for that specific expansion).

Edit: i use the term “come togther” here very loosely.

The game is intentially designed to be done in any order and doing Thaldrassus before the Waking Shore doesn’t make any less sense.

I have been working on a proposal for a catch-up lore and gameplay experience for new players who want to experience the storyline and learn their classes and other game mechanics:

WoW In A Nutshell: A Proposed Leveling Experience For New Players

Goal: Familiarize players with the story and with their class in a quick, fun, educational manner.

Structure:

  • Each segment of WoW In A Nutshell contains five scenarios (each with a companion selected from the lore of the expansion), capped off by a final boss fight with a group of AI-powered lead characters from the expansion.

  • Talents are explained at the start of the leveling process, and at the end of each scenario, players can choose their own talents or have their talents selected for them.

  • New abilities are highlighted, explained, and the key binding process is laid out tutorial-style.

  • No worrying about grinding mobs or purchasing gear – each scenario (plus end boss fight) rewards an appropriate amount of experience and gear, plus some gold and transmog.

  • By the end of each expansion, you automatically reach the target level.

Expansions:

1-10: Exile’s Reach

11-20: Artificial Vanilla Flavor

21-30: The Learning Crusade

31-40: Lich King Nostalgia Tour

41-45: Cataclysm Mini ™

46-50: Checklists of Pandaria

51-55: Legion Express: A Tale of Two Dans (Illidan, Gul’dan)

56-60: Tattle On Azeroth

61-65: Shadowbanned

66-70: Dragon-Lite ™

They’re afraid of newbies to get lost after hitting 70, so you can’t play older content at 70

Why I didn’t like the level squish and the option to choose what expansion to go through that took you up to the current storyline. New players miss the lore and the opportunity to learn their toons. It’s sadly become a race just to do the repetitive end game grind that just feels like a bad way to really do things. This game was about friendship and the story. Not what it is now. A lot of rinse and repeat.

You know you can do it in order right? It’s on you to talk to Chromie n change which set of content to do.

Well now you know.

You… don’t pay again for Classic. If you’re subbed, you can play.

Everything before TWW

I really do love all the condescending posts that OBVIOUSLY DID NOT READ THE POST ABOUT HOW TIME WALKING DOES NOT DO WHAT SO MANY PEOPLE SEEM TO THINK IT DOES

I have -gone- to chromie, I have -enabled- the specific campaign I asked for, I still have it offer me -all- of the freaking quests not delivering them in the order the original release state offered.

As far as I can tell, all Time Walking -actually- does is make it so that the chosen campaign’s MSQ line in the quest log (if it exists) takes priority over everything else and appears no matter where you go rather than just in the appropriate zones.

No amount of you guys insisting this isn’t what it does will magically -make it do the thing you people claim it does-

Actually did not know this. Neat.

Doesn’t solve the issue of Dragonflight.

Unfortunately, because there’s no backporting of ‘Story Mode’ for raids or dungeons, the story will still feel disjointed, because a lot of conflicts are resolved in raids or dungeons. Playing the game linearly will still leave you with more questions than answers.

You can still go back and experience the story by doing the quests at max level. It’s not ‘as intended’ but WoW changes so much expansion to expansion that you will pretty much never be able to experience it ‘as intended’. You can go through the entire BFA expac without interacting with the Heart of Azeroth or azerite armor at all, you’ll be playing with talents that didn’t exist prior to DF, etc. If you’re curious about the story, I would suggest abandoning the need to have to level through it and taking the experience for what it is.

ya been askin for a chromie revamp for years now

Yes, you can.
