if you’re never gonna play them again, why not just delete them? I’ve deleted hundreds of characters over the last 20 years and I’ve retained all of the achievements. If you hate them that much just trash them.

There’s an easy fix for this.
Create groups of the toons you no longer play and favorite the ones you do.
Can we favorite a character? I’ve never seen this before, lol. Is it like a little star next to the character’s name or something like that ?
This is not even remotely true.
I have about 15 lists. The only list that stays on top is my favorites.
Create other lists and name them “Ignore”.
Or, just delete the toons.
I’ve done this but I can’t even move them from the top of the list… at least let me move them so I don’t see them.
What if I don’t want to delete them?? Honestly. Answered that many times in this thread already.
There’s your initial group “warband campsite” and it’s labeled favorites.
I have several other campsites and most of my work in progress toons are there.
My favorites are the four toons I regularly cycle through.
The fact it’s limited to 4 characters annoys me.
I rotate my favorites list regularly. I’m not understanding how you cannot do the same.
Yeah, it’ll take you a few minutes… depending on how many toons you have, but it’s doable.
Characters that I want to play are not in a camp.
I wish I had more in the initial campsite, but alas… that’s how it is for the moment.
I’m kinda hoping that Blizz updates this with player housing.
This is where you are not utilizing this feature to it’s fullest potential.
You place the toons you play regularly in that first camp and make other camps for those you don’t play.
What if I don’t want the ones I’m playing in a camp? Unless there is a reason to. I kind of like seeing individual character screens behind my character.

Why wouldn’t you?
It’s an easy way to sort.
You can utilize the new system or you can continue to be frustrated, but I doubt Blizz will provide you with what you are asking for because we now have camps.
It might not be ideal for everyone, but I find it very helpful with sorting.

This is a problem of your own making with an in-game solution already. I have 4 active camps and 3 inactive camps. The active ones go in order of my likelihood to play that toon while the inactive ones are minimized at the bottom. Solved.
