If fire mage is to be designed around Ignite then atleast let it be able to Crit. Fire mage mainly revolves around 2 things Critical Strike and Ignite. Doesnt make much sense that one of the main features of the whole spec is unable to crit at all. I think that would fix fire mage dps when combustion is down. Yes i know that it would most likely be busted during Combustion but hear me out! Just make ignite be unable to crit during Combustion.
All of our abilites hit like wet noodles so atleast let ignite hit hard.
It is unfair that Warlock chaos bolt is out there hitting for 1 million plus and our Pyroblast is hitting for 400k at best. Or atleast that is what ive been seeing in PVP. I dont know about PVE
What do you guys think?
ORRR… hear me out…
Maybe just make pyroblast do damage because that’s what all fire mages actually want. Not to play a DOT spec but a spec that has scary glass cannon burst damage when you press combust.

I completely agree. The road to Fire’s demise was the dependency of forcing us to push mastery/ignite and AOE for maximum damage. A rework should be more single target, big boom bursts. I want big blasts not simmering Dots and ticks.
Blizzard has no idea what players want or enjoy because they don’t actually play the game, they look at numbers on spreadsheets. Fire desperately needs a loving rework from people who have some knowledge and experience actually playing the class in different scenarios (PvP/M+/Raids).

I totally agree with you Bhakti!! But it doesnt seem like blizzard wants to go that route. Every single fire mage in these forums has been wanting hard hitting pyros and everything else but for our abilites to actually hit hard blizz would have to remove ignite or tune it down alot and everyone has been begging for years to implement that change and they just arent listening

Yeah, as of yesterday, a completely right side of the tree is the lit fuse build, sims higher than the Pyroblast+ignite build. So, your options are Flamestrike, or single target raid. There is no hard hitting Pyro + Ignite spread. This is a pain, because in M+, your Pyro is an absolute wet noodle. You can’t do the Flamestrike build, and hit bosses hard. You also can’t do the Lit Fuse build, and have powerful Pyros.
You’re still not getting invites to M+ outside of guild friends.

Ignire should become a standard passive with a fixed rate increased by talents.
Mastery should be reworked to something else, even something as simple as increasing the damage % increase of hot streaks.
Talents such as controlled destruction should not exist, the damage is too delayed, just increase the damage of pyroblast. And also flamestrike while you’re at it.
Aside that, fire mage problem is purely tuning based, gameplay is great, you can disagree but… You’re wrong if you do.

I agree. Gameplay, is so fun… It’s the most fun that I’ve had playing mage in a hot minute. Don’t change the rotation, hyperthermia procs, the way hot streaks activate… Just F’ing tune it…

Gameplay being great is a bit of a stretch but its not bad either. Its missing a good AOE ability. I am not a huge fan of Flamestrike or any mouse target AOE abilities because it just slow clunky gameplay. I think if we had like Multi Pyroblast ability that causes you to shoot 4 or 5 Pyroblasts maybe hot streak could activate it that way you can shoot multi pyroblasts combined with phoenix flames during AOE situation instead of shooting one pyroblast would be soooo sick!!

I see many people of like minds here. My ideas for a better fire mage are:
- Increase the damage of Fireball, Phoenix Flames, and Pyroblast.
- Introduce a talent to give an option for Flamestrike to cast on and around the enemy targeted (like Earthquake for elemental shaman)
- Maybe reintroduce the Legion version of Ignite where it spread without having to press Fire Blast (since Fire Blast is more useful for Hot Streak).
- Since Pyroblast and Fireball will be doing more damage, make Ignite discharge over a longer time span (6-8 seconds ideally). 4 seconds is too short, especially with all the movement we have to do these days.
- Redesign Combustion so that our spells don’t feel anemic outside of the window. Arcane and Frost mages don’t have this problem with their Arcane Surge and Icy Veins.

Would be cool if ignite could crit, but would likely get bonkers in AoE (and even ST) and lead to some wild crit stacking for the “double dip”, with mastery dropping in relative value and being regained anyway via Improved Combust. At that point just have Ignite generate Ignite while we’re at it lol. Not that I’d mind any of this…
Agree with all of the above though, Pyro just needs a serious numbers buff; even an SKB-amped hardcast can’t catch up with e.g. GS. The Living Bomb talents (in addition to needing a lot of love generally) also need some sort of mechanism to offset the massive hit to ST, like a significant amp to Pyro damage to any afflicted target.

I think there is only one way to do combustion and make our spells hit harder outside it. I think they need to change the Kindling talent spot and make it a choice node competing with another talent that increases damage to most of our spells, but makes it so that we no longer benefit from any cooldown reduction. This would allow more damage between and during combustions without it being a situation like the last few tiers where combustion has become an uptime and thus needing to have lower damage. This would allow people that like the lots of combusts to keep their gameplay and also bring back a style that was like the old fire with the combust being the big button of doom!
If they were to do this, they could also make that talent change Shifting Power to do something that does increased fire damage, but no cooldown reduction. Perhaps something where each pulse does more damage than the last one while channeling?

I mean, I want both, but I’m greedy. If I have to choose, I want hard hitting pyros.

I’m going to have to disagree with this one. Having a third, glass cannon, single target terror is a bit… meh. Maybe have an option for single target, raid type encounters, but I’d rather have a suite of AoE options be the stronger aspect of the spec than shooting Pyroblasts for the last twenty years.
Maybe give Fireball and Scorch some teeth or give Pyroblast a damage buff and another school of magic to work with.
Not to be that guys but… Ignite is already effected by crit. When your spell crits it gets a bigger ignite. At one point (Cata) Combustion was based on watching for multiple crits in a row so you could milk the ignite damage it caused. If ignite ticks could crit it would cause a double dipping effect that makes crit as a stat multiplicative and scale out of control.
This. I’ve played for 20 years and scary pyro is my favorite of all time.
I would give up my proc rate by 70% if they hit 100% harder.
