Just thinking of compiling something for folks that like esoteric advice. Please post your own tips here.
Don’t bank items or gold on a character you play. Make a bank alt and use that mailbox. It’ll be worth it when death catches you by surprise, as it almost assuredly will.
Remember the sub-60 dungeon lockout. If you’re a tank you can conscientiously clear to portals rather than kiting a bunch of mobs to them on the off chance that you or someone in your party has forgotten they’re locked and are about to die.
Run a few characters through the starter part of the game and dump them in an inn. That way they’ll have a head start AND a rested bonus when you have to restart.
If you want a bank alt with a top profession, you’ll have to level it to 35 first.
If that’s the way folks want to do it, that’s fine. Not sure what they’re gonna do when they get to cap, through. Join a raiding guild and die? PvP and die? Duel to the death and die? I imagine those folks will not be long on the HC servers.
What we are about to embark on i did from 2004 till wrath came out. So thats a decent number of years and i had a lot of fun doing it. The people who want to hack it with trading to alts etc, yes they will go, but the people who want an honest challenge will stick about. It was a lot of fun back then… when it was dial up internet
After playing on the PTR for weeks and doing close to 120 levels (picking different classes to try out) without dying here would be my tips for average mostly solo players like me.
Know the dangerous areas (where lots of people die). There are various statistics tables you can look up for each zone that highlight the spots where most people die. For example, in Elwynn Forest that would be the kobold cave where goldtooth resides, and the area around princess the pig. Neither the goldtooth quest or the princess quest have great rewards so delaying them a few levels does not hurt or slow progress. Hogger does not feature as a place where lots of people die.
Be careful grouping. Out in the open world you will often get uninvited requests to group. Sometimes this will be from people who are underleveled for the quest. If it’s easy then go for it. If it’s a place that’s difficult don’t feel bad about rejecting the invite. Also be aware that people in groups tend to take more risks (which is usually fine) but some people go overboard. I ended up in a group with 3 warriors (I was on a priest - I usually play healing characters). We obliterated a large area packed with mobs - but it was chaos - no leader - warriors charging in different directions - no attention to my mana. It was fun - but I wouldn’t do it on live.
If you can do dungeons with people you know. In the low level dungeons Ive done, some problems were caused by i) dps pulling without being asked (impatience is a thing) and ii) running mobs pulling other packs of mobs. Old fashioned tanking where you pull back instead of charge forwards all the time is safer in some spots in dungeons. And patience is a virtue. I also choose to run the dungeons at a higher level than I usually would. For example on my priest I wait to 20 for flash heal for deadmines or wc.
So this guy is pointing out what I think is the Number 1 Tip
Once you get used to the mechanics of HC and get past lvl 30, you have a ton of tools to avoid dying. But you still will… simply by being impatient and complacent.
I feel like having an alt helps with this, especially if they are a different class, because it changes the pace so much. For some reason it kinda refreshes you for when you go back to your main
I only got to 60 on HC once, and during that time I was juggling 3 different alts and making myself play them instead of just griding on my main.
Yes totally. I normally did the quest Cliffspring Falls solo at level 15, on many attempts lol, but when I grouped with a lv 17 hunter to do it, it became much more difficult and he eventually over pulled then fled, leaving me to pay his bill with my life.
The funny part is I think we coulda handled the over-pull but he was too eager to flee. Then after I die, he whispers me “Ready to duos now?”
I just reply, “Not after that lol” log out delete and start over.
