Less Content, More Money, More Often. Out of touch

I finally got to catch up on the Blizzcon WoW news. Anyways, I am disgusted right now.

First off; the expansions go up in price - I get that. I believe Shadowlands Epic edition cost me around $105 Canadian with tax, Dragonflight was around $115 for Epic with tax which I was on the fence about and only bought it once Evokers got early release. This expansion will cost me over $130 Canadian for Epic edition with tax.

So clearly, WoW is getting more expensive. Then you have the sub cost. If I bought an annual subscription with tax is over $250 Canadian. So WoW is clearly NOT a cheap hobby/game.

But then to get news about announcing 3 expansions, and with the price increases(each costing more then the last) you’re basically wanting money from customers more often, to give us less content? Buying an expansion that we knew lasted 2 years, meant that buying it gave me the game for 2 years. It made the cost reasonable. But if it became yearly? Nope. Too expensive for what we get in return.

Take Dragonflight for example; I played it a lot in the first season. By season 2, I quickly felt burnt out being on the same treadmill of loot. My PC broke in July, I didn’t fix it until October and didn’t really miss WoW that much. I already had my AOTC/KSM from season 2, so I just choose to not play.

If expansions are highly expensive, and only fun for the first few months, what’s the point? I remember older expansions like Cata, and MoP that I had fun the entire expansion. Mini/shorter expansions, just put me in the mind of WoD. At least the same amount of “content” as WoD for full price, that feels not worth it. At least WoD had raids I enjoyed.

Everywhere people have inflation, and costs of everything has risen. Food, shelter etc. People just don’t have all this extra money anymore to throw at gaming. A lot of people with disabilities and mental health problems play games like WoW as a way to escape and relax - especially if you’re housebound like myself. Our income just wont support this new model. And don’t even get me started on the fact Epic gets 3 day “early” release.

I always bought Epic editions for the mounts and pets and such, but a lot of people don’t. So what? I’d just have to wait 3 days if I wanted to level with a friend? That doesn’t sound like a good system. Or I play alone, which doesn’t sound any fun. I know other games have early release, it’s the “new” thing to get people to spend more $$$ but c’mon! WoW is an old game, don’t bring new age bad ideas into WoW for greed and cash grabbing.

Over all, I am just sad and disappointed. I currently have 5 months left of my subscription. I just have had a harder and harder time feeling any excitement over spending money on the new expansions - especially with the price increases. I just don’t feel it anymore.

It’s bad enough, I used to always buy the in-game shop mounts/pets - when they were 50% off but now you have all these “limited time” and “get tenders with this pack!” and removing shop stuff to put it on the trading post - which is fine I guess except the trading post prices are always insanely high, we can only freeze 1 item and it just feels more frustrating then fun anymore. Clearly it’s pushed towards getting people to spend real $ for tenders.

All the greedy moves and changes to WoW in the last year, have only pushed me further and further away from wanting to play anymore.

If I felt that way I wouldn’t buy the most expensive option.

WoW had a nice run.

We are now moving into DLC territory.

There are two ways to increase profits, you can either sell to more people or you can sell more to the people you have.

I’m glad SoD isn’t part of retail.

I’ve shelled out enough money for this game, and I’m not pleased with where retail has gone, so I won’t be there for the future lol.

Let me say I am not against DLCs but at the same time the value has to be there. Too many DLCs do not provide enough value and that is the problem with modern gaming industry.

yeah if its less content for more money it might be the last.

Until we see the structure it is hard to say but it seems like it is going to be a challenge moving forward for WoW as a sub based game.

Nothing I saw makes me really want to buy or play any of the next 3 expansions but I will have some fun finishing out Dragonflight. Getting the legendary ax for my Paladin, and I might play the fated season but after that I am done. Not going to be doing the yearly give us an extra $90 every year dlc type thing they seem to be pushing.

I do agree for the most part, I’m just not sure they have to care about people who consider leaving over this. I genuinely believe for every three people like you and me who consider quitting over pricing, there’s an addict or die hard fan willing to pay three times as much if it ensures the game doesn’t die, they get some exclusive collectibles, and daddy Metzen gives them head pats again next Blizzcon.

This is super on the mark. They might say on stage that now is the best time to come back… but really they aren’t looking to get more people. They’re looking to get more money from the people they have. :expressionless:

$.50ish a week is pretty darn cheap.

Because they understand that they realistically aren’t going to get more people.

WoW is a relic. Make it playable on cell phone or console and you might have a chance at getting new players because that’s where today’s gamers mostly are.

Sadly, years ago, I was that addict. I used to live and breathe for WoW. I was kind of shocked when my PC broke in July just how fine I was without it. When my PC broke in MoP for example, I lasted like a week before I ran out and got a new PC. But this time I was just enjoying other hobbies and didn’t seem to get the urge for it. I login, I look around, realize I am not in the mood to do anything, log off. I will try season 3, get my AOTC(only because I never missed 1) and my KSM but probably just quit/take another long break after that.

I have 60 characters all level 60+ yet I just lack any motivation to do anything on them. Didn’t do any of the patch content. Didn’t touch a single dream surger, didn’t do whelp daycare, didn’t do anything lol. Even the caverns I didn’t do much, my Loamm rep stalled around 9. Quests just feel the same over and over. Even raiding which was my #1 reason for playing, just wasn’t fun in season 2 for me. Which is common to Shadowlands where I love Castle Nathria but then didn’t like SoD or the final raid

When they see not so great games like Star Rail on mobile/console/pc make a half a billion dollars in a couple months, people like Bobby are like why aren’t we making that kind of money on warcraft. So then they add in more dlc and microtransactions.

Seems all the money is in mobile at the moment.

You don’t have to pay for a year

You don’t need to pay for the expansion highest tier all at once

People like to create problems where none exist

DF epic was 90 bucks same as this epic edition, unless your paying more taxes than last year in your country i dont know

So let me ask you this.
Why are you going to pay extra to binge 10.0 at a larger volume?

It’s like touching fire, burning yourself, then touching it again.

I go through phases with the game. I’m either very invested or not invested at all. Given pretty much everyone I know is suffering financially right now, I’m not a fan of them making their most loyal customers pay even more for less, especially because, however ridiculous it may seem to some, $90 less can hurt. Or $40 less if you compare to the base edition. Also not really a fan of anything that divides the playerbase into two classes but it’s pretty much inevitable when tokens exist.
