So this eternals movie hit disny+ recently and I finally watched it,
I remember reading about it in passing a while ago but covidlife has killed a lot of things, I remember some kind of writeup about it saying it was middling and well, other things in life got my attention. covidlife is like that. I was honestly shocked to see it show up, I was like “oh yeah” that happened.
so I went into it without a lot of expectations or big knowledge.
have to say … this thing wasn’t bad … so I went back and read a bunch of stuff comparing it to the star wars debacle movies and … essentially people pissed off that it wasn’t a carbon copy of the other avengers movies
kind of felt like this was big unfair. sure it wasn’t a perfect movie and hell, it’s an introduction movie with lots of characters and over a huge amount of time with lots of interpersonal interactions ----- almost impossible to cover it all and also have a movie arc. they bit off a lot. so I can forgive some pacing errors. and it was too dark in spots, like lighting wise. and they shorted the bad guy minion CG here and there, also with the too dark
but it wasn’t a bad movie …
why was this thing effectively mega-panned by folks?

I find that movie kind of boring.

Hm, I guess I could see some of that. Like as a storytelling/editing flaw. I just kind of went with it to see what it was. I think I’ll watch it again after some time, see how it feels.
I think because I’m an old comic guy, it didn’t hit me quite like that. Every series had different writers, designers, editors … and even if it was mostly the same people they are artists, they would get a kick out of doing different takes. And even in a single series as personnel would change so could the vision, story, etc etc etc. I’m used to seeing different styles, I expect it, see it as a good thing. As long as it works, then it works. And the little 4-12 book miniseries the would do, woah, they would go off the walls with everything in those. Story, art, and chars. So I think it’s an automatic pov for me.
I could even take dark world as passable, like a guest writer did it. Though you could see something was off with the main guy, the thor actor seemed bored/uninspired. And the a-list female lead … talented but some mark was missed. I don’t think this material lends itself to hot product a-listers, it needs working actors that can inhabit/become characters, hit marks.
