This may be an unpopular opinion, but I kind of miss Legion MM. I thought I hated it at first, but it kind of grew on me.
Specifically, I kind of miss having Windburst in my rotation and the ability to pump out large portions of AoE. I didn’t like Marking Targets or the Vulnerable debuff too much, though.

While BFA’s MM can be completely underwhelming, I wouldn’t be so binary as to say this has made Legion’s MM good.
There are players that have enjoyed it. I didn’t, and that’s ok. WoD MM (especially with HFC bonus) was magnificent!

You’re absolutely correct. I miss WoD and MoP rotations/specs more than any other version of the class.
And, I actually do not hate BfA MM, but I don’t enjoy how lackluster it feels. I really disliked Vulnerable and Marking Targets, and I wasn’t sold on Sidewinders. I wouldn’t mind Sidewinders and Windburst back, though.
For now I’ve kind of stepped away from the hunter class so I can learn other ranged classes and with Korrak’s Revenge available it couldn’t be a better time to level those alts, but I think I am going to try sticking to MM for the rest of the expansion. Maybe SV here and there for PvP, but I am so tired of BM.

WoD was much better. You had two high-res damage abilities: Chimaera Shot(which did non-physical damage) and Kill Shot(which can be cast twice in a row on CD). You could cast Aimed Shot on the move though the Mastery made it stronger if you stood still.
It was more powerful AND more mobile, with few hardcasts.

To me MoP was the best for Hunters because of how good they were and it was frankly before most of the pruning. Plus it was the funnest to me.

Trick shot only working on 3+ targets has to be what irritates me the most about the BfA iteration. Being able to cleave 2 stacked targets would not only help the spec in a situation the class struggles mightily, but would also make it a lot less annoying when targets move and you aren’t sure if your multi-shot will hit enough of them.

And MoP survival was super fun especially with the tier bonus set (don’t remember which but the one that would proc explosive shots).

I’ve have been cool with Legion MM if they toned down the RNG slightly (at least by the end of the expansion due to gear or something) and/or decreased the ramp up time. It always sucked that by the time you got all the targets vulnerable, they were dead. Rapid Fire aoe was pretty fun though and felt really juicy when you could just mow things down.
I only liked Legion MM during Emerald Nightmare. Once they nerfed Sidewinders and the duration of Vulnerable I hated it. I switched to BM as soon as I read the PTR patch notes.
Plus switching specs in Legion was not easy due to how legendaries dropped. So having patch 7.1 completely change how the rotation works was truly awful.
Early on I really hated BM, SV, and MM and I was the last in my group to get a legendary and it was the neck piece before it was useful. Then I didn’t get another one until nearly two months later and it was the ring. I ended up quitting until the final patch because of how much RNG it took, and because I didn’t enjoy my favorite class anymore. For me, Legion was just as bad as BfA and it was due to class design and RNG.
LOL, I also got Prydaz as my first legendary drop and yeah it was very weak back then, but it was a generic legendary so it was actually good for me given I ended switching specs to BM. My second legendary was the bracers and it got nerfed a few weeks later when 7.1 came out >_>
Drop rates did increase in 7.1 but it actually got worse in Nighthold because the new legendary introduced in that patch for BM (shoulders iirc) was ridiculously overpowered. But eventually I had them all and at that point I was pretty happy.
I guess I did play up until or shortly after Nighthold. I never got the shoulders, even as the expansion was dwindling down. I hated the legendary system so much back then. I loved the artifact weapons and the mage tower, though. Lol. Glad we don’t have that system in BfA.
I was messing around in Legion content with an alt and I was looking over the MM artifact and I kept thinking, “Man, I wish we still had this in the rotation, or maybe this buff to an ability or…” the BfA prune was too much.
I had a ton of fun with Marks and SV in WoD. I actually didn’t think WoD was too terrible. There was just lack of content. I’m getting my hopes up for Shadowlands.
WoD mm was fun, mobile and thematic. Aimed shot on the move, Killshot and Camo (cd started the moment you used it)

I liked WoD MM too, it encouraged staying still while not requiring it. It had meaty hits with chimera shot and kill shot and getting into kill shot range around an MM hunter was a mistake.

I honestly want wod survival back and make its mastery like multistrike was. I loved seeing butt tons of small numbers. Made me think I was killing with a death by a thousand cuts method.

Honestly, it was an idea i had for Blade-masters, where they did large amounts of damage in multiple small amounts.
MM was sort of in a good spot in mop and wod, but mop was some major class pruning. We lost some traps, a lot of our stings, deterrence, deflection and counter attack. This pruning us what totally cut hunter survivability in bg’s and the loss of talents like survivalist and improved traps/ trap mastery cut back on niche utility specially in bgs and made it into “kite or die” unless your in superior gear. Legion had more utility, that we lost with legion weapons and what I’m going to call a pvp talent tree pruning. But yeah. I agree legion MM was in a better spot than currently.
Better than BFA’s mockery of a once great spec. God I hate it so much man it’s like we lost so much and gained so little
