I was able to find the stuff I needed from the AH to make my first piece. Since I can’t craft, how do I acquire a rank 2 base item so I can upgrade? I can’t find what exactly I need to search for at the AH.

As you craft a legendary in a particular slot, you’ll upgrade the bar. You would need to fill the bar up in your crafting UI in order to craft rank 2. The guide I linked explains how 5 and 6 are acquired.
If you have the materials for a rank 2 recipe but not the materials to level up to rank 2, type in general or trade chat “LF (insert profession here) profession. Tipping (insert amount here) pst” and see if someone can craft it for you.
So I can’t just buy what I need? I have to get into crating?
Buy the crafted item from the AH. That is what most do.

You can buy it (the materials) for the rank 2 and have someone make it if they have rank 2. They made the recipes “level up” as you craft more. You craft so many to get to the next rank up and it is a big gold sink.
You can 100% buy the materials but someone else has to craft it if you do not have rank 2. You would have to craft to level it up to rank 2, which if you aren’t gonna level up to rank 4 I would just buy it off the AH. Rank 2 should be pretty cheap (probably cheaper than the materials).
You can either buy from the AH the base items you need to upgrade, or ask a friend who can craft the item to make it for you. I craft, but the cost of upgrading the base unit (on my server) for the mats was roughly 500,000 gold to get it to rank 4 (I crafted the cloth chest piece). I don’t have the gold to level up another piece in any armor set. I now rely on buying the base units for my alts on the AH.
If your server’s AH doesn’t have the piece you want, wait a bit and it might show up, ask a friend to craft it, or ask in your guild if anyone would be willing to craft it for you.
If all else fails, it isn’t that difficult to craft the item needed yourself. . . it just takes gold and time.

Can I save up and go to any rank I want or do I have to go up one by one?
If you want rank 1 but the 190 ilvl white blank item on ah. If you want rank 2 buy the 210, and so on.
You can go from no legendary to rank 6 in one go if you want, you don’t have to get each individual rank.
You spend the same amount of ash/cinders going up one rank at a time as you spend by going from no legendary to a rank 6. However, the gold cost of buying each blank (190, 210, 225, 235, 249, 262) makes it unwise to do it that way.
235 (rank 4) is fine for most things. The difference between a 235 and 262 is going to be around 50-70 dps in most cases.

Also, the legendary power stays the same. The only increase is main stat (str, agi, int) or secondary stat (haste, vers, mast, crit) and armour.
Try to avoid crafting it in an armour spot where you’d wear a domination socket and make sure you put the correct missives in it as you can’t change the stats later.
