Legendaries getting started

I’ve read a bunch of guides but I’m still lost on how to get started. I’m a Necrolord Holy Paladin. I guess I can get two legendaries and I’m aiming for Duty-Bound Gavel and Shock Barrier. I’m on chapter 3 of the Zereth Morris campaign. I’ve done a couple runs of Torghast. I’ve done some quests with the runecarving guy and I saw him turn into Primus.

A few questions.

A legendary is a piece of gear I can craft. Do I choose two pieces of gear? Does it matter which two? At this point should I just buy the base items on the AH?

I’m a JC but it looks like buying the base item is cheaper than buying the mats. Also there’s an “increase rank” option to craft the ring and necklace. Uhhhh, am I losing anything if I just buy the simple base item from the AH? Or should I invest in doing the full increase rank and craft it myself?

I guess right now I’m focusing on completing the ZM campaign and maybe trying to get flying in ZM too at the same time. What else should I be doing right away?

Thanks!

One of your legendaries has to be the “Unity” legendary. The unity legendary has the same powers as the covenant legendaries. (Which for a Necrolord Paladin is the Duty Bound Gavel power.) For that one, keep working on the Zereth Mortis stuff.

When you get to the end of the main campaign, you’ll get a legendary Unity belt (which will be the equivalent of a rank 6 legendary.)

When you get to revered with the Zerith Mortis faction, you can buy the Memory of Unity, which will let you craft the Unity legendary at any rank and in different slots. This is the only way to get the double legendary second power at rank 7 or in a slot other than belt. This one can be crafted in most gear slots, so you might want to look up a pally guide to see what the preferred slot is. But I’d just use the “free” belt you get from the Campaign until you’ve got your second legendary done.

To craft a legendary, you need to have unlocked the memory (just right click a memory while in the room with the Runecarver to teach it to him.)

For your second legendary, the Shock Barrier memory drops from Layer 3 or higher in the Coldheart Interstitia wing of Torgast.

Then, you just need the materials. You’ll need the base item of the rank you want. (You want rank 7.)

I’d jump right to the rank 7 legendary so you don’t have to buy multiple base items. (When you upgrade a legendary’s rank, you get credit for the legendary materials, but any old base items are lost.) As you noted, at this point in the expansion, it’s going to be cheaper to just buy it from the AH in most cases. The rank 7 base items will be ilvl 291. Shock Barrier can be on legs or feet. Legs are more likely to interfere with tier slots, so boots are probably the better option, but you may want to look at some pally specific guides to make sure. If you go with the boots, you want to look for ilvl 291 Shadowghast Greaves on the AH.

You’ll need two missives to determine which two secondary stats it gets. You can buy those off the AH — they were like 40g each when I bought mine recently.

And then you need the “Torgast” legendary materials. For rank 7 you need 5150 Soul Ash (obtained from any Torgast Layer), 1650 Soul Cinders (obtained from layer 8+ Torgast runs) and 2000 Cosmic Flux (obtained from layer 13+ in Torgast, but also very plentiful from doing stuff in Zereth Mortis.) One of the vendors in Haven will also sell you a Bag of Explored souls for 3000 Cosmic Flux. The bag contains 5150 Soul Ash and 1650 Soul Cinders. (Convenient, huh?) Still, Cosmic Flux has enough uses that I’d probably do a few Layer 8+ Torgast runs for the mats instead for your first crafted legendary.

When you enter a portal for a Torgast wing and pull up the interface to select your layer, you can mouse over the reward part of the layer icon to see how much of the materials a layer will give. (Mousing over the main part will give you a recommended ilvl for the layer.)

Oh great thank you. So I understand:
-For Shock Barrier I’ll need drops from Torghast and ZM and missives. The guides say for pally this should be on a ring.
-After the end of the ZM campaign I get the belt which will have rank 6 Duty Bound Gavel.
-At this point I can have the belt or the ring, not both.
-At revered ZM I can change the belt to rank 7 and move it to any other slot, for which paladin would be feet, and now I can use both the ring and the feet legendaries
-The 293 ring on the AH is 14K. The 293 greaves are 12K.

Should I craft the ring myself and upgrade it myself, or just eat the 14K? Should I just grab the greaves right now in any case?

Everything I’m seeing says that Shock Barrior can only be made on Legs and Feet. (Including the tooltip on Wowhead.) The Icy Veins guide lists feet as the best slot for it. The Icy Veins guide has Duty Bound Gavel on the ring slot, and ring is a valid option for Unity.

If you want to make rank 7 base items on your own, you’ll need to continue in Zereth Mortis to unlock the upgrade item. As you’ll need revered before you can get the Memory of Unity, you’ve got some time to figure out the mat costs to make it yourself vs. buying it — or even if you want to be lazy and just keep the belt. (Best option will be to math out what mats you’d need to make it at rank 7.)

I’m confused. I got the rank 2 feet with Shock Barrier. I have the Vestige of Origins to get it up to rank 4, and the Vestige of the Eternal to get it to rank 7. How do I do it? What do I click?

The rank upgrade items are used when making the base item itself, so are only useful if you have the appropriate crafting profession. You use the Vestige as an optional reagent when making the base item to get it to rank 7.

To upgrade an existing legendary, you’ll need a new base item of the rank you want and then when you go to the runecarver, he’ll have an option to upgrade a legendary. You’ll need the old item, the new base item, and the soul ash, soul cinders and cosmic flux to make up the difference between the two ranks.

Yup, figured that out. I wasted tons of gold but thanks for your help. So complicated why.
